Canary Wharf homes and wall beds
In the neighbourhood around Canary Wharf, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 66%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 16%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for wall beds, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The National Heritage List has 54 entries within half a mile of the centre of Canary Wharf. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and wall beds can be designed to work around them. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. Where a home in Canary Wharf is on or beside a main road, it is useful to mention that during the design visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.
The wider area includes historic houses like Queen's House, about 1.8 miles south. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go. For families living near Our Lady and St Joseph Catholic Primary School, wall beds in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.

Wall beds in Canary Wharf
Spare rooms in London homes are often small, and a bed that’s used a few times a year takes most of the floor. When the bed is folded away, the room is open again, ready for work, exercise or play. When guests come, the bed folds down. If you are living with a study that doubles as a spare room and a flexible room for a growing family, wall beds made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.
Many homes around Canary Wharf have been built since 2000, and in newer homes, bedrooms tend to be compact, with plasterboard stud walls. Wall beds are fixed into the studs or held by fixings made for the board. Any built-in cupboard that came with the home can be replaced or extended to match.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

What wall beds cannot fix
Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work aren’t part of what we do. Please bear these in mind too:
- New sockets, lighting or wiring (your electrician)
- Making good the walls after other work
- Mattresses, which you choose to suit the mechanism

What affects the cost of wall beds
A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- How many doors and drawers there are
- The internal fittings
- The overall size of the piece
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.
Before the design visit
There is no need for exact sizes or plans. Just send what you can:
- Your postcode and the borough
- A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- Examples of the look you are after
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
To get a quote, drop us a line using the contact form and tell us a little about the room. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a written quote afterwards.
Is it time for wall beds?
Some want a room that can change as the family does. A playroom, a study or a hobby room can still have a bed for visitors when it is needed.
Typical reasons people contact us include:
- A studio that works by day and night
- Somewhere comfortable for guests to sleep
- A home office that also sleeps guests
- A spare room that is rarely slept in
For a flat near Canary Wharf station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.
Choosing a carpenter
- Where they’ll park and unload
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
- Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?

How fitting day works
There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Fitting day starts by covering floors and setting out the sections. Each piece is levelled and fixed to suit plasterboard or block. Any hand painting can be finished on site.
- You get in touch with some details about the room.
- We visit, measure and talk through the bed, shelves and desk. What the wall is made of matters, as the bed has to be fixed securely.
- You receive a quote in writing.
- The cabinets are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the bed and storage in your home.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Let us know about parking near your home
- Clear the area where the furniture is going

Flats, conversions and lettings
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways as well as the room, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it is worth raising at the design visit.
FAQs: wall beds in Canary Wharf
I live near Canary Wharf station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Tower Hamlets and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details about the room.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Canary Wharf?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.
How do you get the furniture up the stairs?
Getting it in is planned during the design visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.
Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?
Possibly. It depends on your lease, and some require the building owner’s consent for alterations. Your lease is something we can’t advise on.
Are fold-down beds safe to use?
A wall bed is designed to be used regularly when fixed and used as its maker specifies. We fix the mechanism securely to a sound wall or floor, and you should follow the maker’s guidance on lowering and lifting it.
Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?
It is something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so there are no gaps at the sides.
