Fitted home offices in Blackwall, Tower Hamlets

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make fitted home offices for homes in Blackwall, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • A desk buried under papers
  • Shelves that sag under books and files
  • An alcove or landing that could take a desk

Fitted home offices for homes in Blackwall

The desk is the heart of a home office. It is made at a height and depth to suit you and the way you work, with drawers or cupboards beneath where they’re useful. Shelves and cupboards can be planned around it. We’ll discuss the details during the design visit in Blackwall. If your home has a corner too odd for a standard desk and a spare room that has to be an office and a guest room, that is what home offices are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Many homes around Blackwall have been built since 2000, and in newer homes, the second bedroom is often the office as well as the guest room. A desk with shelves and closed storage can share the room with a wall bed or a sofa bed. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on studs, so shelves are fixed into the studs or use fixings made for the board.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and talk it over at home. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

What it is made from

Pull-out drawers

A set of drawers can sit under one end of the desk. Leave knee room in the middle. We plan it at the design visit.

Hand-painted finish

Some people prefer a hand-painted finish for its softer look. It is done on site, in the colour you choose. It can be matched to the room’s woodwork.

Fitting day, step by step

When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections made in our workshop come in next, one at a time. How long fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Newer homes often have finished floors, painted walls and new doors that mark easily, so everything on the way in is covered before the sections arrive. Corners and door frames are covered as well. Once inside, the pieces are joined in place.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the room. A line on how you work helps too.
  2. At the design visit, we look at the room, the window and your equipment.
  3. Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish. You can ask us about any part of it.
  4. Your office furniture is made at our workshop, sized for the room.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave it ready for work, with the cable routes left open.

Before fitting day

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to

Getting a quote

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. Afterwards, we send a written quote. To arrange the visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

What prompts fitted home offices in Blackwall

Trailing cables are one of the things people most want to sort. Planned routes through the desk keep cables out of sight. Any new sockets are for your electrician, and we design around them.

If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:

  • Glare from a window on the screen
  • Paperwork and files with nowhere to go
  • A spare room that has to be an office and a guest room
  • No way to put work away

The wider area includes historic houses like Queen's House, about 1.7 miles south. If your own home is a period one, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk.

What to check before you book

  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • How parking will work on your street
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote

How to choose a carpenter in London

Before and after fitting day

Most of what helps is simple. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Let us know about every device that needs a home
  • Think about the space you need to push back
  • Think about glare on your screen
  • Check whether you will need new sockets

We run each drawer and open each door with you before we go. We’ll show you the cable routes and how they’re meant to be used. That way, you can start work right away.

Use the cable routes so wires do not rub the paint. Tight cables can mark edges over time. A little tidying now and then keeps the office calm.

Questions we’re often asked

Is parking a problem for fitting in Blackwall?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

My home in Blackwall is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can a home office go in a loft room?

Yes, in a converted loft room. We plan around the headroom, so the desk sits where you can stand up. Shelving and cupboards can fill the lower space under the slope.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Is it possible to have an office and a guest bed in one room?

In many rooms, yes. We plan the office so there is still space for guests, or with doors that hide the desk away. If space is tight, a wall bed can be built in alongside.
