Wall beds for your home in Church End
Wall beds in Church End: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Church End were built before 1919 (about 36%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 29%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Church End include Parish Church of St Mary (Grade II*), less than half a mile south-west, and The Manor House (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles south. If your own home is listed, changes inside that alter its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. If your street in Church End joins a main road, it’s worth telling us during the design visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.
If your home is one of the older houses near St Margaret's Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. Close to Victoria Park? Morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they won’t shade the window.

How we make wall beds for Church End
A wall bed needs clear space in front of it to fold down, so we plan the layout with that in mind. We think about where a chair, rug or desk will go, so the bed can come down without a shuffle. We make wall beds from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about a guest bed that disappears in the day and a bed that fills a little-used room.
A bedroom used as a guest room, a study or a dressing room needs different storage. In Church End, as anywhere in London, we start by asking what the room is for. The layout, the doors and the inside follow from that. You choose the colour, spray-painted or hand-painted.
After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Off-the-shelf units can leave gaps at the sides or top. We can build to the full height and width, with storage or shelves filling the rest of the wall. Ready-made pieces come with a fixed inside layout, rather than where you need them. With fitted furniture, the inside is planned around what you keep.
There’s no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To arrange a design visit, message us from the contact page.
Why us?
- Every quote follows a design visit
- Over 300 projects completed
- Scribed to uneven walls
- Saturday visits and fitting by prior arrangement

Flats, leases and landlords
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, after checking the walls at the design visit.
Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.
Common questions about wall beds
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Church End?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to let us know about parking during the design visit.
Will a conservation area stop me having wall beds fitted in Church End?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Should I send photos?
Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. You can send them when you tell us about the room on our contact form.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.
What are your wall beds made from?
Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF gives a smooth, stable surface for paint; birch plywood is strong and good for shelves and drawer boxes, and the quote says which is used where.
Is a wall bed safe?
A wall bed is designed to be used regularly as long as they’re fixed and used as the maker specifies. We fix the mechanism securely to a sound wall or floor, and you should follow the maker’s guidance on lowering and lifting it.
Materials and finishes
Bed mechanism housing
The bed sits inside a cabinet built around its mechanism, fixed securely as its maker specifies. When the bed is up, the front looks like cupboard doors.
Spray-painted finish
You choose the colour, and we apply it in the workshop.
The problems wall beds solve
Most people come to us with a guest room that sits empty most of the year. A standard bed takes up the floor all the time, and folding it away gives the room a second life.
If you recognise any of these, it is worth talking to us:
- A hobby room with a bed for guests
- A home office that also sleeps guests
- Shelves or a desk around the bed
- A real mattress for visitors
For a flat near New Southgate station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.
Choosing a carpenter
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
- Will they visit to measure before quoting?
- Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
- Have they thought about parking near you?
What happens on fitting day
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. For a flat, building rules and lift booking are worth checking early; if you live in a house, let us know about steps, paths and parking. We plan the details of the day at the measuring visit. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- To begin, drop us a line using the contact form; a brief note on the room and how often guests stay is plenty.
- We visit to measure up, look at the wall and floor and make sure there is clear space in front to lower the bed.
- You receive a quote in writing for the wall bed and any storage.
- The bed housing and any shelves or desk are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the cabinet in your home and fix the mechanism as its maker specifies.
- We go through the bed with you; the cabinet has the spray-painted or hand-painted finish you chose.

- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

Getting a quote
You do not need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly at the design visit. To get started, tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us about the room. The written quote follows the visit.
