Fitted bedroom furniture in Hackney

About 33% of the homes in the area around Hackney went up before 1919, and about 24% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Within a mile of the centre of Hackney, 15 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. In inner London, a large part of the street parking sits inside borough-run controlled parking zones. A van working in Hackney will normally need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension arranged through the council, which often needs notice. Parking is worth mentioning at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.

For a flat near Homerton station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St John of Jerusalem, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. Close to Clapton Park? Wall beds are typically planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay.

Hackney is about 2 miles south-west of Shoreditch, part of the London Borough of Hackney. From period terraces to newer flats in Hackney, we measure the room as it is and design around it. Our work takes in places right across the rest of London.

Postcode districts we cover here for wall beds: E9, E8, E3 and E5. You will find streets here like Homerton High Street, Primrose Square and St John's Church Road, and we cover homes on all of them for wall beds. Hackney is near the A107 and B113; on busy main roads, unloading wall beds takes a little planning. If you are just outside Hackney, we also cover Homerton (1 mile north), Lower Clapton (1 mile north), Hackney Central (1 mile west), London Fields (1 mile south-west) and Cambridge Heath (1 mile south-west). Across the rest of the rest of London, our area takes in Shoreditch (2 miles south-west), Hoxton (2 miles south-west), West Hackney (2 miles north-west), Stoke Newington (2 miles north-west), Stamford Hill (2 miles north-west) and Upper Clapton (2 miles north).

A little further out are Homerton University Hospital (less than half a mile north) and Cell Project Space (0.9 miles south-west). For a walk, there is Old Ford Island.

Wall beds in Hackney: what you get

The mattress has to suit the mechanism; the mechanism maker sets the size, depth and weight it can take. We’ll talk through what suits the bed at the design visit, so you can choose a mattress that works. If your home has a home office that also sleeps guests and a playroom that can sleep visitors, wall beds made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

With most households around Hackney in purpose-built flats, mansion blocks and modern blocks are both possible. A mansion block bedroom may have a chimney breast, high ceilings and walls that are not straight, while modern flats tend to have plasterboard partitions. Either way, wall beds are fixed to suit the wall.

Our quotes are written in plain words. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

From workshop to your room

You will not need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed at the measuring visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Sections come into the flat in the order they’re fitted, so the flat doesn’t fill up. Floors are covered and dust is kept down. Fixings are chosen for each wall, solid or plasterboard.

  1. We start with how the room is used and who’ll sleep there. The bed can sit among shelves or beside a desk.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and check the wall and floor.
  3. We send a written quote for the bed cabinet and storage.
  4. The bed housing and any shelves are built in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the cabinet is fitted and the bed checked as it lowers and lifts. We show you how the bed works before we leave.

How it is made

Shelves

Open shelves soften a wall of cupboards and keep it from feeling heavy.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF stays flat and paints beautifully, so it suits the doors on the bed cabinet.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, after checking the walls during the design visit.

Why bespoke in Hackney?

A sofa bed is cheaper and simpler, which suits some homes. A wall bed takes a proper mattress and gives back the floor, which matters in a small room. Large ready-made pieces can be hard to get up the stairs or into the lift, while fitted furniture arrives in sections sized for the route. The sections are assembled once inside.

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Tips worth knowing

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:

  • Look at your lease before fixing to the walls
  • Consider how many people will sleep in it
  • Allow space for pillows and duvets
  • Follow the mechanism maker’s mattress guidance

Should the bed start to move differently, stop and let us know. Do not try to adjust the mechanism yourself unless its maker says you can.

Think about who will sleep in the bed and how often. It shapes the bed size and the type of mechanism, and whether a desk or shelves go around it.

Your questions about wall beds in Hackney

Is parking a problem for fitting in Hackney?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

My home in Hackney is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Wall beds are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Do photos help?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

What happens when you come to measure?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.
