Caring for painted furniture
These points come up often when people plan bespoke kitchens. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:
- List what needs a home in the kitchen
- Choose your appliances before the design is final
- Line up your plumber, electrician and Gas Safe registered engineer early
- Allow space to walk round an island
Follow the appliance makers’ guidance for your oven, hob and dishwasher, and the care advice for your worktop.
Damp walls should be dealt with before cabinets are fitted. Cabinets against a damp wall can trap moisture, particularly on external walls.
Bespoke kitchens in Hackney Central: what you get
You choose the worktop, sink and appliances, and we design the cabinets around them. Knowing the appliance sizes early lets us leave the right spaces, from the oven housing to the dishwasher. Your quote sets out the materials and finish. People normally come to us about open shelves with cupboards below and a pantry cupboard with shelves and drawers; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
Most homes around Hackney Central are purpose-built flats, from mansion blocks to newer developments. A mansion block kitchen may have high ceilings and uneven walls, while newer flats tend to have plasterboard walls and service boxing. Wall cabinets are fixed to suit the wall.
The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Fitting day, step by step
With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly. How long fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Some buildings have a concierge, a lift booking system or set working hours, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. Communal areas and floors are protected on the way in.
- You get in touch and tell us about the room and how you cook.
- At the design visit we measure up and plan the cabinets around the worktop, sink and appliances you choose.
- A written quote follows for the cabinets, materials and finish.
- The cabinets are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the cabinets in your home, working around your plumber, your electrician and an engineer on the Gas Safe Register.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
How to get a quote
The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing. To arrange the visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Bespoke kitchens in Hackney Central: local notes
Homes built before 1919 make up about 33% of the housing in the area around Hackney Central, with about 24% built between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how kitchens are fixed and fitted. The Graham Road and Mapledene Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Hackney Central. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. In inner London, a large part of the street parking sits inside borough-run controlled parking zones. That normally means a van in Hackney Central needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council. We ask about parking at the measuring visit, so the van can be planned for.
Living in a block of flats near London Fields station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. Sutton House, about 0.5 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true. If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Michael and All Angels, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top.
Hackney Central is within the London Borough of Hackney, about 1 mile south-west of Shoreditch. We work across all London boroughs and the City of London, and Hackney Central is part of that. In Hackney, Hackney Central is one of the places we cover.

What else we make in Hackney Central
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Many off-the-shelf kitchens use chipboard carcasses with a printed or wrapped finish. Ours are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then spray or hand painted, finished to suit the room. In a flat, every bit of floor counts, and standalone furniture uses more of it than it needs. Built-in pieces use the full height and the tricky corners.
What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We will talk through what you need inside at the design visit, then set it out in the quote.

Flats, leases and landlords
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you.
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall, which we check at the design visit.
Questions from Hackney Central
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Hackney Central?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
Do you cover homes near London Fields station?
Yes, homes across Hackney and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Just mention it when you get in touch.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so check with the council first.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
Do you handle the gas and electrics for the kitchen?
No, that work is for other trades. Your plumber connects the sink and dishwasher, a Gas Safe registered engineer handles any gas, and your electrician does the wiring, and we fit the cabinets.
Honest limits
As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:
- Connecting a gas hob or cooker
- Moving water or waste pipes
- Structural changes to the room
