Wall beds for homes in London Fields
Many people now work from home in a room that also has to sleep guests. We can design a wall with a fold-down bed and a desk or shelving around it, without the bed taking over. We can allow for cables to the desk, while new sockets are for your electrician. If you’re living with a living room with a bed that folds away and a real mattress for visitors, that’s what wall beds are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Purpose-built flats are home to most households around London Fields, and blocks often have rules on lift booking, deliveries and working hours. It helps to check those with the managing agent before fitting day. If your flat is leasehold, your lease may also need checking before wall beds are fixed to the walls.
The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the wall bed designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

Practical tips
Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after. These habits help most:
- Allow space for pillows and duvets
- Decide who the bed is mainly for
- Check your lease if you live in a flat
- Give the paint time to cure fully
The mechanism maker’s guidance says how much bedding can stay on the bed when it folds away. We can build a cupboard beside the bed for extra bedding.
Think about the route into the room. Furniture made in a workshop comes in sections sized for stairs, landings and lifts, so tell us about narrow stairs or a small lift.
What it costs
Several things affect the price:
- The overall size of the piece
- Parking near your home
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- Doors and drawers, and how many
There is no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, discuss the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.
Helping us understand the room
Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:
- Examples of the look you’re after
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- How you want to use the space
Getting a quote starts with a few details: the room, rough sizes and some pictures if you have them. When you’re ready, fill in our short enquiry form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a quote in writing.
Wall beds for homes in London Fields
In the area around London Fields, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 34%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 23%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Near the centre of London Fields, Historic England’s list includes The New Lansdowne Club (Grade II*), less than half a mile east, and Church of St Michael and All Angels (Grade II), under half a mile west. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features such as panelling can require listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. All of London, Hackney included, is inside the ULEZ. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in London Fields. How the van gets to your door is planned at the design visit.
If you live near Haggerston Park, wall beds are normally planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay. The wider area includes historic houses such as Sutton House, about 0.7 miles north-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice. For an older house near Church of St Michael and All Angels, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice.
London Fields is within the London Borough of Hackney, about 1 mile south-west of Shoreditch. We design and make wall beds for homes in London Fields and the rest of Hackney. We list London Fields among 20 places we cover in Hackney.
In E8, E2 and E9, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. We cover homes on streets such as Tudor Road, Forest Road and Duncan Road, whether you want wall beds or another piece made for the room. London Fields sits close to the A1207. If you’re just outside London Fields, we also cover Hackney Central (1 mile north), Cambridge Heath (1 mile south-east), Dalston (1 mile north-west), Hackney (1 mile north-east) and Kingsland (1 mile north-west). Fitting day, step by step
If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made at the design visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving the room tidy. How long fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. For a flat, the stairs, landings, lift and doors are measured as well as the room: the furniture is made in sections that fit through all of them. Some older blocks have small lifts or none.
- You tell us about the room and who the bed is for.
- At the design visit we measure the room and check the wall and floor.
- A quote follows, setting out the design and finish.
- The bed housing and any shelves are made in our workshop.
- Fitting day: the cabinet is fitted and the bed checked as it lowers and lifts.
Before we arrive
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
How to get a quote
The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Choosing bespoke means a design visit, a quote, workshop time and fitting, rather than a quick order. In return, the cabinet, shelves and finish are designed together. Flats tend to have walls interrupted by doors, radiators and sockets, and standard widths rarely fit between them. Built-in pieces are sized for each stretch of wall.
Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Common questions about wall beds
Does a conservation area in or near London Fields affect fitted furniture?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in London Fields?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, by prior arrangement. Let us know when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.
Will you provide a mattress for the bed?
What matters most is that the mattress suits the mechanism. We will explain its limits at the design visit, so you can choose with confidence.
How do you get the furniture up the stairs?
Getting it in is planned at the design visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and each section is made to a size that will get through.
My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?
Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.
What we do not do
We make and fit furniture, and we don’t do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. There are a few other points to bear in mind:
- Decorating around the cabinet
- Advice on your lease
- Building work to make a wall sound
If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can drop us a line using the contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. How it works.
