How fitting day works

At the end, we tidy up. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and explain how to look after the paint. How long the fitting takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Noise from drilling travels in a block, so neighbours may appreciate a note, and many buildings limit noisy work to certain hours. Fitting day is planned around any rules your building has. Saturday work is by prior arrangement where the building permits it.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the window and the room.
  2. We visit to measure the window and talk through the design.
  3. We send a written quote setting out the design, materials and finish, for you to look over.
  4. The seat is built in our workshop and painted to your chosen colour.
  5. We bring it to your home, fit it and leave it ready to use.

Getting a quote

We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To book a design visit, message us from the contact page.

Window seats for homes in London Fields

The storage under a window seat is often as useful as the seat itself. A lift-up lid is simple and gives access to the full depth, while drawers mean you do not have to move a cushion to reach things. At the design visit in London Fields, we’ll help you choose. If you are living with a recess under the window doing nothing and a bay with no furniture that fits, that’s what window seats are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Around London Fields, most households live in purpose-built flats, and blocks often have rules on lifts, deliveries and when work can happen. It helps to check them with the managing agent before fitting day. If the flat is leasehold, the lease may need checking before window seats are fixed to the walls.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Common questions about window seats

Will a conservation area stop me having window seats fitted in London Fields?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

I live near London Fields station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Hackney and the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Electrical work is not something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design.

Can you build a window seat over a radiator?

Yes. We build a grille or an open front into the seat so the heat is not trapped. Space is left around the radiator too. If you want the radiator moved, that’s work for your plumber.

Is a lid or drawers better for a window seat?

Many seats use both. Drawers are easier for daily use, and a lid section holds larger things. In a child’s room, drawers tend to be simpler for small hands. We talk it through when we visit.

How it’s made

Pull-out drawers

A seat can have drawers along its whole length, or drawers with a lid section. Around a radiator, the drawers are placed to leave room for the heat. The design visit settles the mix.

Spray-painted finish

Spraying gives a smooth, even surface. We spray in the workshop, so the finish is complete before the seat comes to you. You choose the colour.

Honest limits

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Painting the walls of the bay
  • Any wiring, which needs an electrician
  • Any change to radiator pipes, which needs a plumber

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf benches come in the maker’s finishes. We paint the seat in the colour you choose, so it can match the woodwork or the walls. Off-the-shelf furniture is sized for an average room, and flats are rarely average, so it can waste space or block a door or radiator. Built-in pieces are designed around them.

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.

London Fields homes and window seats

About 34% of the homes in the streets around London Fields went up before 1919, and about 23% between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The centre of London Fields is within about a quarter of a mile of the Broadway Market Conservation Area. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Parking on many inner London streets is controlled, with zones run by each borough. That usually means a van in London Fields needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council. We ask about parking at the measuring visit, so the van can be planned for.

Close to Haggerston Park? Window seats can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. If you live in a flat close to London Fields station, the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. Sutton House, about 0.7 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the deep reveals of an older window can frame a seat neatly.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
