Bespoke TV and media units or ready-made?

A bespoke unit is not instant: it needs a design visit, a quote and workshop time. If you’re renting or moving soon, a standalone stand may suit you better. In a compact new-build room, standard sizes rarely fit the walls exactly, while fitted furniture is made to the room. It can also be planned around boxed-in pipes and risers.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit.

How we make TV and media units for Nine Elms

A built-in TV wall often needs sockets in new places, like behind the screen or in the equipment cupboard. That job is for your electrician. It is best done before we fit, and we can tell you where the unit will sit. If you are living with leads that show from every angle and standard units leaving gaps, TV and media units made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

In a home built since 2000, the aerial point and sockets are typically already fixed in place. Many homes around Nine Elms are from those years, so we design TV and media units around the existing points rather than moving them. Any new socket is a job for your electrician, and we leave space and cable routes for it.

The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the TV unit we have designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and it is what the workshop builds to.

How fitting works for TV and media units

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Stud walls can carry pipes and cables, so we check before drilling, with heavier pieces tied into the studs. Other trades handle any new sockets or plumbing, ideally before fitting day.

  1. You get in touch about a built-in TV unit.
  2. At the design visit we agree the layout and talk about colour and finish.
  3. You get a quote in writing covering the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray-painted finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. We fit it in your home; a hand-painted finish is applied once it’s in and is easy to touch up later.

How to prepare

Looking after your furniture

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. A few pointers help:

  • Let us know about access early
  • Book your electrician first if sockets need to move
  • Note which boxes need line of sight for their remotes
  • Find out how much space each box needs around it

Doors can settle a little once the unit is in use. Hinges can typically be adjusted to line them up again.

Avoid piling devices on one shelf, as they trap each other’s heat. Give each its own space.

Could you do it yourself?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

FAQs: TV and media units in Nine Elms

Do you cover homes near Battersea Park station?

Yes, homes across Wandsworth and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Nine Elms?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the design visit.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Typically not. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character may need listed building consent.

Does my lease affect fitted furniture?

Possibly. Leases vary, and some need consent for alterations. Your lease is something we can’t advise on, so it’s worth checking before fitting day.

How is the furniture painted?

You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Can you build a TV unit for a wall-mounted TV?

The unit can be planned either way. For a wall-mounted TV, the layout works around the bracket position, and if it stands on the unit we size the top for it.
