Wall beds in Angell Town: what you get

Not every mattress suits every wall bed, because the mechanism maker sets limits on size, depth and weight. We can go through what the mechanism allows when we measure, so you can choose a mattress that works. If your home has a spare room that’s rarely slept in and a study that doubles as a spare room, that’s what wall beds are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Around Angell Town, most households live in purpose-built flats, and many blocks have rules about using the lift and when work can happen. Checking with the building’s managing agent early keeps the day running smoothly. A leasehold flat may need consent for fixing to walls, so check your lease first.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Let us know about it when you get in touch.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We can’t give advice on leases.

What we do not do

It’s worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Supplying mattresses
  • New sockets, lighting or wiring (your electrician)
  • Building work to make a wall sound

Not sure whether your space suits wall beds? You can use our contact form and we’ll tell you. How a job runs, step by step.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood
  • Shelves or a desk alongside
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Fold-down bed mechanism
  • Hand-painted finish

How we price wall beds

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. The main factors are:

  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • The internal fittings
  • How big the furniture is

We do not publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing. To arrange a design visit, use our contact form.

Before the design visit

These details help when you contact us:

  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling

It is useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space. To share them, send us a few details through our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

Fitting day, step by step

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, which keeps the lines straight. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Where there’s no lift, each section is sized to be carried up the stairs safely. The tightest landing sets the largest piece. Once inside, the sections are joined and fixed.

  1. It starts with a short note from you.
  2. At the design visit we agree the layout and the colour.
  3. You receive a quote in writing covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cabinets are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. We fit everything in your home and check the bed lowers and lifts smoothly.

Preparing the room

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance

Getting a quote

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a written quote for you to look over. To book one, tell us about the room on our contact form.

How it is made

Moisture-resistant MDF

A painted MDF front looks crisp, which suits the doors and side panels.

Hand-painted finish

If you’d like the bed to match the skirting or doors, hand painting works well.

Questions we’re often asked

Is Angell Town in the area you cover for wall beds?

Yes, Angell Town is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Lambeth and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

My home in Angell Town is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

How long will the wall bed take to fit?

How long the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We’ll talk it through at the design visit.

How much space does a wall bed need?

It depends on the bed size and the mechanism. We measure up and make sure the bed has room to fold down.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.

What finishes do you offer?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
