How we make wall beds for Hammersmith

Spare rooms in London homes are often small, and a bed that is used a few times a year takes most of the floor. When the bed is folded away, the room is open again for a desk, a hobby or just space. Guests still get a proper bed when they stay. If you are living with a living room with a bed that folds away and a proper bed instead of a sofa bed, wall beds made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

Older London houses often have sash windows, and their position, along with any shutters, affects where furniture can go. If your home is one of the many around Hammersmith built before 1919, we plan the layout so the window opens fully and the light still comes in. Doors are chosen and hung so they clear the bed, the radiator and the door to the room.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

What wall beds can’t fix

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:

  • Structural work to the wall or floor
  • Electrical work for reading lights
  • Choosing a mattress for you

Not sure whether your space suits wall beds? You can get in touch through our contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Materials and parts

  • Shelves or a desk alongside
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood
  • Fold-down bed mechanism

The problems wall beds solve

Others want the bed to be part of a wider storage wall. Shelves, cupboards or a desk built around it make the whole wall useful.

Wall beds can help with:

  • A playroom that can sleep visitors
  • A study that doubles as a spare room
  • A guest room that sits empty most of the time
  • A guest bed that disappears in the day

For an older house near Church of the Holy Innocents, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design.

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

You can buy wall bed units off the shelf, often for less, and in a straightforward room they may be enough. They’re made in standard sizes, so they may not suit uneven walls, low ceilings or alcoves. Ours is made to the room you have. Tall standalone furniture needs fixing back to the wall so it can’t tip, and older walls of brick or lath and plaster make that harder than it looks. Fitted furniture is designed with the wall in mind.

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Questions we are often asked

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Kensington Olympia station?

Yes, homes across Hammersmith and Fulham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

I live in a flat in Hammersmith. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

What space does a fold-down bed take up?

You need clear floor in front of the cabinet for the bed to fold down, as well as the depth of the cabinet itself. We measure this at the design visit, so the design works.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

Bedrooms in Hammersmith: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 68% of the housing in the area around Hammersmith, with about 9% built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. There are 64 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Hammersmith. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. About 32% of households in the area around Hammersmith live in flats in converted or shared houses, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.

Kelmscott House, about 0.5 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go. If you live near Brook Green, keeping wall beds off the window wall keeps the room bright.

Hammersmith is about 2 miles south-east of Fulham, within the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. Hammersmith is part of the area we cover, and the process is the same everywhere we work. Hammersmith is one of 16 places on our list for Hammersmith and Fulham.

We work across the W6, W14, W12 and W4 postcode area for wall beds. Streets in the area include The Square, Ravenscourt Square and Westcroft Square, and homes on each of them are within our area for wall beds. Close by, we also work in Brackenbury Village (1 mile north-west), Brook Green (1 mile east), North End (1 mile east), West Kensington (1 mile east) and Old Chiswick (1 mile south-west). Across the rest of Hammersmith and Fulham, our area takes in Fulham (2 miles south-east), Parsons Green (2 miles south-east), Walham Green (2 miles south-east), West Brompton (2 miles south-east), Hurlingham (2 miles south-east) and Chelsea Harbour (2 miles south-east).

What it is made from

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be done on site, once it is fitted. Marks are easy to touch in.

Bed mechanism housing

The mechanism sets the size of the housing and the mattress it takes.

How fitting works for wall beds

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and answer any questions. How long the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, especially in a controlled parking zone, so it is useful to tell us at the measuring visit what’s outside. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturday fitting can be arranged.

  1. We start with what the room is for, day and night.
  2. We visit, measure up and check the wall the bed will fix to.
  3. You get a quote in writing for the bed cabinet and any storage around it.
  4. The cabinets are built in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies.

How to prepare

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Getting a quote
