Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Poplar

Many London homes have a small room that’s awkward as a bedroom. Fitted out from wall to wall, it can take the clothes that crowd the bedroom, leaving the bedroom with more space. We plan the layout so you can stand, turn and see everything. If you are living with a walk-in wardrobe within the bedroom and a dressing table with drawers and a mirror, walk-in wardrobes made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

Many homes around Poplar were built since 2000, and a newer bedroom seldom comes with storage that fits how you live. Walk-in wardrobes can be designed around the window, the radiator and the door swing. In a managed block, the lift and delivery rules are worth checking before fitting day.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Questions from Poplar

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can you make walk-in wardrobes for a home in Poplar?

Yes. We cover all of Tower Hamlets and the rest of London, and Poplar is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You do not need to watch us work.

How long does fitting take?

It depends on the room. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

How we price walk-in wardrobes

Prices vary from room to room, and it comes down to:

  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Parking near your home

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. It’s useful to talk about parking at the measuring visit, so it can be planned.

What to send when you get in touch

These details help when you get in touch:

  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Your postcode and the borough

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

Fitting day, step by step

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and it’s useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as we’ll have talked about at the measuring visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Newer homes often have stud walls, so on fitting day heavy pieces go into the studs or stand on the floor. Floors are protected throughout, as many newer homes have finished floors that mark easily.

  1. You let us know about the room.
  2. At the design visit we measure the walls, floor and ceiling at several points, as few rooms are truly square.
  3. You receive a quote in writing covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the walk-in wardrobe in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each unit is levelled and scribed to follow the walls.
  6. We check everything with you, and fresh paint should be treated gently at first.

Preparing the room

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

Ask for a quote

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, then send a written quote. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

  • Damp treatment or repairs
  • Painting the walls of the room

Poplar homes and walk-in wardrobes

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Poplar were built since 2000 (about 66%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 16%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The National Heritage List has 63 entries within half a mile of the centre of Poplar. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and walk-in wardrobes can be designed to work around them. About 89% of households in the area around Poplar live in purpose-built flats, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. For a flat, walk-in wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

For families living near Tower Hamlets College, walk-in wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. If you live near Bartlett Park, walk-in wardrobes are usually planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay. If you live in a period home close to St Peter's Church, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go.

Is bespoke worth it?

A basic rail system is easy to change, and that has real appeal. Bespoke joinery lets you mix doors, drawers, shelves and hanging, painted to match the room. Large standalone pieces do not always fit the lift or the hallway, while fitted furniture comes in sections sized for the route. The sections are joined and fixed once inside.

Tricky rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it.
