How fitting works for wall beds

You won’t need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and it is useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as agreed at the design visit. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Drilling can be heard through the walls and floors of a block, and some buildings set hours for noisy work. We plan the day to suit those rules. Saturday work is by arrangement where the building permits it.

  1. You let us know about the room and who the bed is for. The bed can sit among shelves or beside a desk.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and check the wall and floor, as the bed must be fixed securely.
  3. We send a written quote for the bed cabinet and storage.
  4. We build and finish everything in our workshop.
  5. We fit it in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies. We show you how the bed works before we leave.

Advice

Wall beds for homes in Ratcliff

The cabinet is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. Doors on the front can look like a run of cupboards, so the room doesn’t read as a bedroom by day. We make wall beds from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about a living room with a bed that folds away and somewhere comfortable for guests to sleep.

In a block, a bedroom wall may be shared with the neighbours or the corridor, and those walls can be solid or plasterboard. With purpose-built flats home to most households around Ratcliff, fixings are chosen with neighbours in mind as well as strength. Tall pieces are fixed back securely.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Do you need wall beds in Ratcliff?

Some people are tired of sofa beds. A wall bed takes a proper mattress, chosen to suit its mechanism, and the bed sits flat on its frame.

Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:

  • Hiding the bed when it is not in use
  • A studio that works by day and night
  • A study that doubles as a spare room
  • A flexible room for a growing family

For families living near Marion Richardson Primary School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.

Choosing a carpenter

  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Whether you will get a written quote, not just a figure

What we do not do

Not everything around wall beds is carpentry, like an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • Lease checks, which are for you and your building’s managers
  • Plastering or decorating the room
  • New sockets, lighting or wiring (your electrician)

Not sure whether your space suits wall beds? You can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What it’s made from

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Shelves or a desk alongside
  • Fold-down bed mechanism

Is bespoke worth it?

A standard bed is simple and needs no mechanism, which is a fair point in its favour. Where the room needs to be more than a bedroom, a wall bed earns its place day after day. Large ready-made pieces can be hard to get up the stairs or into the lift, while fitted furniture arrives in sections sized for the route. The sections are assembled once inside.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that’s part of the price. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured.

Ratcliff homes and wall beds

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Ratcliff were built between 1973 and 1999 (about 33%) and since 2000 (about 29%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. 20 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Ratcliff. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. About 76% of households in the neighbourhood around Ratcliff live in purpose-built flats, based on Census 2021. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Paul, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. Close to Stepney Green Park? Morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Questions we’re often asked

Do you make wall beds for homes in Ratcliff?

Yes. We cover all of Tower Hamlets and the rest of London, and Ratcliff is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Does a conservation area in or near Ratcliff affect fitted furniture?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

We plan the route in at the measuring visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and each section is made to a size that will get through.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.
