Shepherd's Bush Window Seats

Window seats for your home in Shepherd's Bush: window seats for bays and under sash windows, with storage inside. We visit to measure and talk through the design, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it.

  • Toys spread across a bedroom floor
  • An empty bay that does not get used
  • A radiator that makes the space hard to use

Questions we are often asked

Can you fit window seats to the uneven walls of an older house in Shepherd's Bush?

Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Do you make window seats for homes in Shepherd's Bush?

Yes. Shepherd's Bush is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Hammersmith and Fulham and London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

What is a window seat made from?

Our window seats are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then painted. A moisture-resistant grade suits a spot by a window, where condensation can form. Your quote confirms the materials and finish.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Normally not. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings can require listed building consent for works that affect their character, so check with the council first.

Is a lid or drawers better for a window seat?

It depends on what you will store and how often you will reach for it. A lid gives access to the whole space, good for blankets and occasional things, while drawers mean you do not have to move the cushion.

What happens when you come to measure?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

About our window seats in Shepherd's Bush

Cushions aren’t something we supply, so we agree the seat size with you and you can have one made to fit. You can then choose the fabric and style yourself. We plan the depth and height so the seat is comfortable with a cushion on it. We make window seats from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are off-the-shelf pieces that never quite fit the window and a nursery or bedroom short of storage.

Around Shepherd's Bush, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and older houses have plenty of odd corners: under the stairs, in the bay, along the hall and under the eaves of a converted loft. Fitted storage is designed to make those spaces useful.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It sets out the window seat designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

What affects the price in Shepherd's Bush

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. The main factors are:

  • The overall size of the piece
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Before the design visit

Some details help us understand the job before we visit. When you get in touch, it is useful to send:

  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Do you need window seats in Shepherd's Bush?

Some people plan a window seat as part of updating a room. Mention any decorating plans during the design visit so the timing works. Decorating itself is for your decorator.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • Standard furniture leaving gaps in a bay
  • No space for toys and games
  • Unused space below a sash window
  • No comfortable place to sit in the light

For families living near Addison Primary School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work

How fitting day works

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, especially in a controlled parking zone, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturday fitting can be arranged.

  1. First you tell us about the bay or window where you’d like a seat.
  2. At the design visit we measure the bay or recess and check the radiator, cill and any shutters. We also talk about lift-up lids or drawers.
  3. You receive a written quote for the seat we have discussed.
  4. We make the seat, the lids or drawers and any grille in our workshop.
  5. The seat is fitted in your home and checked so the lids and drawers run well.

Before we arrive

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Getting a quote

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly during the design visit. To get started, send us a few details through our contact form. The written quote follows the visit.

Caring for painted furniture

Getting the most from window seats starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
  • Decide if the seat is part of a larger piece
  • Think about the cushion you’d like and who will make it
  • Mention any parking rules on your street

We can give you the seat measurements for a cushion maker. Let the paint cure before the cushion goes on, to protect both the fabric and the finish.

Every so often, look at the hinges and any handles. Tightening early stops a small looseness getting worse. If a lid or drawer starts to catch, use our contact form and describe what’s happening.

Materials and finishes

Moisture-resistant MDF

Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well. It’s used for the fronts, side panels and radiator grilles. The moisture-resistant grade is a sensible choice next to a window.

Lift-up lids

A lift-up lid gives access to the full depth of the seat. It is good for bulky things that are not needed daily. The lid is made to lift and close cleanly.

Window seats for homes in Shepherd's Bush

About 67% of the homes in the area around Shepherd's Bush went up before 1919, and about 14% between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Shepherd's Bush include Church of St John the Baptist (Grade I), under half a mile east, and Debenham House (Grade I), about 0.5 miles east. If your own home is listed, changes inside that alter its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs. For fitting in Shepherd's Bush, a van usually needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. We ask about parking at the measuring visit, so the van can be planned for.

For an older house near Shepherd's Bush Tabernacle, the deep reveals of an older window can frame a seat neatly. If you live in a flat close to Shepherds Bush station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

Shepherd's Bush is part of the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, about 2 miles south of Fulham. Our work takes in places right across Hammersmith and Fulham.

We work across W12, W11 and W14 for window seats. You will find streets here such as Bard Road, Stowe Road and Wells Road, and we cover homes on all of them for window seats. Shepherd's Bush sits close to the A402, and we plan where the van can stop before fitting day. Other places close to Shepherd's Bush include White City (1 mile north), Holland Park (1 mile east), Notting Hill (1 mile north-east), Kensington (1 mile east) and Notting Dale (1 mile north-east). We also make window seats in nearby places such as Fulham (2 miles south), Parsons Green (2 miles south-east), Walham Green (2 miles south-east), West Brompton (2 miles south-east), Hurlingham (2 miles south) and Chelsea Harbour (3 miles south-east).
