Window seats for your home in Parsons Green
What happens on fitting day
However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturday fitting can be arranged.
- To begin, drop us a line using the contact form; a brief note on the bay or sash window is enough.
- We visit to measure up and work out how warm air from the radiator will reach the room.
- Your written quote sets out the seat, the grille, the materials and the finish.
- In our workshop the seat is built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with the grille made to match.
- We fit it in your home and scribe it to the walls, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.
How to prepare
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

Arranging a design visit
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, send us a few details through our contact form.

How we make window seats for Parsons Green
Lots of period homes across London have sash windows. A seat beneath one needs to sit below the cill so the window still opens and closes easily. Where there are working shutters, the seat must leave room for them to fold back. These details are measured when we visit your home in Parsons Green. Most enquiries start with an empty bay that doesn’t get used and looking for a reading spot by the window, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
Outside walls in houses from before 1919 are usually solid brick, which can be cold, so a gap and ventilation behind fitted storage help avoid condensation. That matters around Parsons Green, where a large share of the homes are that old. Damp should be sorted before anything is fitted against the wall.
If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Bespoke window seats or ready-made?
For a straight window with no radiator, a ready-made bench can do the job. A bespoke seat earns its place where there’s a bay, a radiator or a need for storage. At the design visit, we will tell you honestly which approach suits your window. Alcoves and recesses in period houses are rarely a standard width or depth, so ready-made units rarely fill them properly. Made for the space, the furniture uses the full width and height.
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, which the quote allows for. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit.

Materials and finishes
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is made in layers, which makes it strong and stable. It goes into the frame, the seat top and the drawers, with the edge either shown or painted.
Hand-painted finish
Some people prefer a hand-painted finish for its softer look. It is done on site, in the colour you choose. It can match the woodwork around the window.
Questions we are often asked
My house in Parsons Green is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?
Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
My home in Parsons Green is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
What finishes do you offer?
You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
What does a bespoke window seat cost?
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. A bay with angled sides involves more work than a straight recess, and drawers more than a lid. We set it all out in a written quote.
Do I get to choose the colour?
The choice is yours, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.
Will a window seat work below a sash window?
Yes. Seats suit sash windows in many older homes. We measure the cill, the window and any shutters, so the seat fits without getting in the way of the window. Repairs to the window itself are not our work.
Before and after fitting day
The finish lasts best with a little care. These practical tips help:
- Decide if the seat is part of a larger piece
- Mention any parking rules on your street
- Clear the bay or window area before the design visit
- Check whether there’s a radiator under the window
Condensation can form on windows in cold weather, so wipe the cill and the back of the seat if it gets wet. A little ventilation helps keep things dry. Should you have a question about the seat, get in touch through our contact form and we will help.
Every so often, look at the hinges and any handles. Tightening early stops a small looseness getting worse. If something stops working smoothly, fill in our short enquiry form and tell us.

Flats, conversions and lettings
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so each section is sized to get through.
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
