Window seats in Kensal Rise, Brent

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make window seats for homes in Kensal Rise, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • A bay with no furniture that fits
  • Wanting a seat without blocking the radiator
  • A nursery or bedroom short of storage

Window seats for your home in Kensal Rise

Could you do it yourself?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Window seats in Kensal Rise: what you get

We make the seat itself, and you can source a cushion to the size we give you. You can then choose the fabric and style yourself. We make the seat to suit the cushion you plan, with a suitable depth and height. If your home has off-the-shelf pieces that never quite fit the window and no comfortable place to sit in the light, window seats made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.

Where original shutters, doors or panelling survive, they’re worth designing around. Around Kensal Rise, where homes from before 1919 make up a large share, new storage can be made to sit beside them rather than replace them. Door styles can be chosen to suit the age of the house, and painted to match. For a listed home, fixing into original joinery can need consent, so check first.

The furniture is built in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

How fitting works for window seats

On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections made at our workshop come in next. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, particularly in a controlled parking zone, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturdays are possible by arrangement.

  1. It starts when you contact us about a window seat.
  2. At the design visit, we look at the window, the radiator and what you need. Shutters and cills are noted too.
  3. Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. Your window seat is built in our workshop, shaped to the window, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave it ready to use, with the lids or drawers checked with you.

Before fitting day

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going

Questions from Kensal Rise

Does a conservation area in or near Kensal Rise affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Kensal Rise station?

Yes. We cover all of Brent and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

How long does it take to fit a window seat?

The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Every part is made in our workshop before we arrive. If you’d like the fitting on a Saturday, that can be arranged.

Should I choose a lift-up lid or drawers?

It depends on what you’ll store and how often you’ll reach for it. A lift-up lid opens the full depth, which suits bulky things you don’t need every day, while drawers are easier with a cushion on top.

How much does a window seat cost?

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. A bay with angled sides involves more work than a straight recess, and drawers more than a lid. Everything is set out in a written quote after the visit.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

What affects the cost of window seats

Several things affect the price:

  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • The overall size of the piece
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Parking near your home

Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Before the design visit

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall

Rough measurements are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit. To arrange it, drop us a line using the contact form and let us know about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Where other trades come in

We make and fit furniture, and we don’t do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. Please bear these in mind too:

  • Painting the walls of the bay
  • Any wiring, which needs an electrician
  • Moving or replacing a radiator, which is for your plumber

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can get in touch through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.
