Window seats in Greenhill, Camden

In Greenhill, we design window seats around the room you actually have. Your window seat is designed at a visit to your home and made in our workshop.

  • A bay with no furniture that fits
  • Wanting a seat without blocking the radiator
  • A child’s room that needs storage and seating

Window seats in Greenhill

About our window seats in Greenhill

A radiator under the window is common, and a seat has to work with it. A seat built over a radiator needs a grille or an open front, so the heat is not trapped. We design the grille into the front of the seat and leave space around the radiator. We will look at your radiator at the measuring visit in Greenhill. We make window seats from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are no space for toys and games and looking for a reading spot by the window.

In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Greenhill, the space under the stairs in a terraced house often holds the gas meter, the electricity meter or the fuse board. Those have to stay reachable, so any storage is designed around them. Sash and bay windows are common in houses of that age too, and good places for seating with storage below.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Fitting day, step by step

When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made in our workshop, one at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so let us know about permits and bays during the design visit.

  1. You let us know about the window and the room, with a note of any radiator or shutters.
  2. At the design visit, every side of the window is measured. Then we discuss the seat height and storage.
  3. The design is agreed and a quote in writing follows. Take your time with it.
  4. Every part is made in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The seat is fitted, scribed to the walls and checked with you.

Why bespoke in Greenhill?

Off-the-shelf benches are not designed to sit over a radiator. Placed in front of a radiator, they block the warmth. A bespoke seat has a grille or open front designed in, so the heat can reach the room. Alcoves and recesses in period houses are rarely a standard width or depth, so off-the-shelf pieces either don’t fit or leave a gap either side. Made for the space, the furniture uses the full width and height.

The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

FAQs: window seats in Greenhill

Is parking a problem for fitting in Greenhill?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

Is Greenhill in the area you cover for window seats?

Yes. We cover all of Camden and the rest of London, and Greenhill is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.

Should I choose a lift-up lid or drawers?

Many seats use both. Drawers suit things you use often, and a lid suits bulky items. In a child’s room, drawers tend to be simpler for small hands. We talk it through when we visit.

What is a window seat made from?

Our window seats are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then painted. Next to a window, the moisture-resistant grade is a sensible choice. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

Can you fit a window seat under a sash window?

Yes. Sash windows are a natural place for a seat in many period homes. The cill height and any shutters are measured carefully, so the seat fits without getting in the way of the window. Repairs to the window itself aren’t our work.

How long is the fitting for a window seat?

How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Every part is made at our workshop before we arrive. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

Honest limits

We are carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It’s useful to know these before you plan the job:

  • Fabric covers and cushions
  • Making good the walls, which is for a plasterer or decorator
  • Fixing the window itself

Fitted storage in Greenhill

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Greenhill were built before 1919 (about 65%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 10%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how window seats are fixed and fitted. Within a mile of the centre of Greenhill, 11 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Camden is inside it. Vans bringing furniture to Greenhill fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. We plan parking and access with you at the design visit.

Living in a block of flats near Hampstead Heath station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. If your children go to The Royal School or a school nearby, window seats can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit. Close to Hampstead Heath? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and window seats can give those things a place.

Flats, leases and landlords

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We can’t give advice on leases.

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so each section is sized to get through.

How it’s made

Lift-up lids

Lift-up lids are a simple way to add storage under a seat. Any cushion has to come off before the lid can lift, so it is best for occasional storage.

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting gives the seat a very even surface. It is applied in our workshop, and the paint needs time to cure fully once fitted.
