Window Seats in Bloomsbury

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on window seats in Bloomsbury starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.

  • Wanting a quiet place to read
  • No space for toys and games
  • A ready-made bench that does not fit the bay

Flats, conversions and lettings

If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it is worth raising at the design visit.

About our window seats in Bloomsbury

A window seat turns the light by a window into a place to sit. We design and make window seats for bays, sash windows and recesses, typically with storage below, under a lift-up lid or in drawers. In Bloomsbury, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. Typical reasons to get in touch are toys spread across a bedroom floor and an empty bay that doesn’t get used; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Purpose-built flats are home to most households around Bloomsbury, and in a flat, the hall, the recesses and the windows are where extra storage usually goes. Window seats are made in sections that fit the stairs, lift and doors, then assembled in place. If a boiler or consumer unit sits in a cupboard, it keeps its clearances and access.

Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

What it costs

Several things affect the price:

  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • How big the furniture is
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • How square the room is

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.

What we need to know

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. It is useful to include:

  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • What the furniture needs to hold

A quote begins with some details from you: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, drop us a line using the contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, then send a written quote.

Is it time for window seats?

The most common reason is wanting to make more of a bay or window. A bay can be an tricky space for furniture, and a seat makes it part of the room. It gives you a place to sit in the light.

We are often asked to help with:

  • Looking for a reading spot by the window
  • A nursery or bedroom short of storage
  • No space for toys and games
  • A bay with no furniture that fits

If you live near Lincoln's Inn Fields, window seats can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

Choosing a carpenter

  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Off-the-shelf benches come in the maker’s finishes. Ours is spray-painted or hand-painted in a colour agreed with you, so it sits with the skirting, the shutters or the walls. Standard furniture does not allow for boxed-in pipes, risers or meter cupboards, leaving gaps or blocking access. Fitted furniture is built around them.

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. Tell us about parking at the design visit.

What you get with us

  • Scribed to uneven walls
  • A design visit, then a written quote
  • Saturdays by prior arrangement
  • Built in our workshop and fitted in your home

Common questions about window seats

Will a conservation area stop me having window seats fitted in Bloomsbury?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to London Euston station?

Yes, homes across Camden and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Do photos help?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough measurements. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.

What does a bespoke window seat cost?

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. The shape of the window, the mix of drawers and lids, and any grille all play a part. We set it all out in a quote in writing.

How fitting day works

You won’t need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared, as we’ll have talked about during the design visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a block without a lift, every section goes up the stairs, so it’s sized to be manageable. The tightest landing sets the largest piece. The pieces are assembled in the flat.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the window and the room.
  2. At the design visit we measure the bay or recess and check the radiator, cill and any shutters.
  3. A written quote follows, with the design, finish and fitting days set out.
  4. Your window seat is built in our workshop, shaped to the window. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The seat is fitted in your home and checked so the lids and drawers run well. Any radiator grille is fitted so heat can still reach the room.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Getting a quote

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing. To arrange the visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Advice

Fitted storage in Bloomsbury

About 44% of the homes in the area around Bloomsbury went up before 1919, and about 21% since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Near the centre of Bloomsbury, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Pancras (Grade I), less than half a mile north-west, and Church of St Giles in the Fields (Grade I), about 0.6 miles south. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, can require listed building consent from the council. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If your home is on or just off a main road, it helps to mention it. We can then plan where the van will stop.

If your home is one of the older houses near St George the Martyr Holborn, a radiator under the window just needs a grille in the seat front. The wider area includes historic houses like Dr Johnson's House, about 0.9 miles south-east. If your own home is a period one, the deep reveals of an older window can frame a seat neatly.
