Sudbury Window Seats

In Sudbury, we design window seats around the room you actually have. We design your window seat at a visit to your home, make it in our workshop and fit it.

  • A ready-made bench that does not fit the bay
  • A bay with no furniture that fits
  • A radiator that makes the space hard to use

How we make window seats for Sudbury

A window seat can hide a surprising amount of storage. A lift-up lid is simple and gives access to the full depth, while drawers are easier to reach if there’s a cushion on top. We will talk through which suits the way you use the room. If your home has off-the-shelf pieces that never quite fit the window and no space for toys and games, window seats made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Sudbury, many have had the loft converted, leaving low eaves and sloping ceilings. Fitted storage can make use of the eaves, the bay or the hall. We build storage in lofts that are already converted or boarded.

You get the quote in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

What it’s made from

Doors and drawer fronts

What shows of the seat is mainly its fronts. We make them plain or panelled, with handles to match. A radiator grille can be built into the front.

Birch plywood

A window seat needs to be sturdy. That is why we use birch plywood for the frame and top. It suits the drawers below too.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, and that is best sorted before fitting day. We cannot give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

Honest limits

We do not treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Any wiring, which needs an electrician
  • Any change to radiator pipes, which needs a plumber
  • Seat cushions, which you source separately

If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

FAQs: window seats in Sudbury

Do you cover homes near Sudbury & Harrow Road station?

Yes. We cover all of Brent and the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do you make window seats for homes in Sudbury?

Yes. We cover all of Brent and the rest of London, and Sudbury is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Can you build a window seat over a radiator?

Yes. We build a grille or an open front into the seat so the heat is not trapped. We also leave space around the radiator. If you want the radiator moved, that is work for your plumber.

My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?

It’s something we deal with all the time. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth.

What prompts window seats in Sudbury

Parents often want a window seat for a child’s room, with toy storage below. Drawers make it easy for children to reach their things. It also keeps the floor clear.

If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting in touch:

  • A period room that needs furniture to suit it
  • A radiator under the window getting in the way
  • No space for toys and games
  • A child’s room that needs storage and seating

Living in a block of flats near Sudbury & Harrow Road station? Then the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked

How fitting day works

You won’t need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Interwar houses usually have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, though we still measure the route in not just the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it is going, with floors protected throughout.

  1. To begin, tell us about the room on our contact form; a brief note on the bay or sash window is enough.
  2. At the design visit we measure the window and the radiator, and plan a grille or open front so heat isn’t trapped.
  3. A quote in writing follows, covering the seat and the grille.
  4. We make the seat and grille in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The seat is fitted with the radiator grille in place, so the heat keeps moving.

Before fitting day

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to

Getting a quote

A quote begins with some details from you: the room, rough measurements and some pictures if you have them. To send them, get in touch through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, then send a quote in writing.
