Window seats for homes in Kingsbury

We make each window seat in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives the seat its strength, as it is strong and holds screws firmly, and MDF gives the fronts and panels a smooth surface for paint. Once painted, by spray or by hand, it is brought to your home in Kingsbury and fitted. We make window seats from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are wanting new furniture to sit well in an older room and unused space below a sash window.

In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around Kingsbury, many have had the loft converted, leaving low eaves and sloping ceilings. Those spaces, along with bays and hallways, are where fitted storage can add the most. We build storage in lofts that are already converted or boarded.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the window seat we’ve designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

FAQs: window seats in Kingsbury

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Kingsbury?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to tell us about parking during the design visit.

Can you make window seats for a home in Kingsbury?

Yes. We cover all of Brent and the rest of London, and Kingsbury is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

What finishes do you offer?

You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

What happens when you come to measure?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need someone to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

Practical tips

Getting the most from window seats starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Move furniture away from the window so we can measure
  • Note the position of any radiator and its pipes
  • Think about the cushion you’d like and who will make it
  • Think about whether you’d like shelves either side

Once the seat is fitted, it’s ready to use. Paint needs time to cure fully, so treat the new finish gently at first. Avoid placing heavy objects on the painted surfaces while it hardens.

Don’t block the grille with cushions or things stored in front of it. Keeping it clear helps the radiator work as it should. Storage over a radiator stays warm, so it is best for things that do not mind it.

What affects the price in Kingsbury

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. This is what makes the difference:

  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • The internal fittings
  • How many doors and drawers there are

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that is part of the price. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.

What to send when you contact us

Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:

  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Examples of the look you are after
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling

We quote once we’ve seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Pull-out drawers

Drawers let you see everything at once. Children can normally manage drawers more easily than a heavy lid. We make the boxes from birch plywood for strength.

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish works well on grilles as well as flat fronts. It is carried out in the workshop for an even coat. The colour is your choice.

Fitting day, step by step

At the end, we tidy up. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so any section going up there is sized for them. The main stairs in houses of that age are typically straighter. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the window and the room, including any radiator under it.
  2. We come to measure and plan the seat, the storage and any radiator grille with you.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the design, finish and fitting days set out.
  4. We make the seat, the lids or drawers and any grille in our workshop.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and the floor.

Before we arrive

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Getting a quote

If you know what you want, say so; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Advice

The problems window seats solve

The most common reason is wanting to make more of a bay or window. Bays are hard to furnish, and a built-in seat makes good use of them. It becomes a place to sit, read or look out.

Some of the things we are asked to solve include:

  • A room with shutters and sashes that deserves a proper seat
  • Toys spread across a bedroom floor
  • A bay window that is hard to furnish
  • Off-the-shelf pieces that never quite fit the window

Close to Roe Green Park? Window seats can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Will the quote be in writing?

Kingsbury homes and window seats

In the area around Kingsbury, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 77%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 16%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how window seats are fixed and fitted. The National Heritage List records 5 entries within half a mile of the centre of Kingsbury. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and Brent sets its own rules. If your road in Kingsbury falls in a zone, the van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Tell us what the parking is like during the design visit.

If you live in a flat close to Hendon station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it. If your children go to Kingsbury Green Primary School or a school nearby, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit.
