Preston Window Seats
Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make window seats for homes in Preston, each designed at a visit to your home.
- A child’s room that needs storage and seating
- A bay window that’s hard to furnish
- Looking for a reading spot by the window
Window seats for your home in Preston
How we make window seats for Preston
Many windows have a radiator beneath them. Over a radiator, the seat needs a grille or open front so warmth can reach the room. The front of the seat includes a grille, with space left around the radiator. We’ll look at your radiator at the measuring visit in Preston. Typical reasons to get in touch are a period room that needs furniture to suit it and unused space below a sash window; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Preston, the hall is often wide enough for coat and shoe storage. Bays at the front suit a seat with storage below, with a grille so any radiator below keeps heating the room. Each space is measured and window seats are made to suit it.
A written quote is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It sets out the window seat designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

Boards, parts and paint
Spray-painted finish
A spray-painted finish is smooth and even. It’s done in our workshop before fitting. The colour is agreed with you.
Doors and drawer fronts
Fronts are made from moisture-resistant MDF and painted to your colour. Panelled fronts can echo the woodwork in a period room. The gaps are kept even all along.
From workshop to your room
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it looks as though it was always there. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so any section going up there is sized for them. The main stairs in houses of that age are normally straighter. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.
- It starts when you get in touch with a few details about the window.
- We visit to measure the window and talk through the design.
- A quote in writing follows, with the design, finish and fitting days set out.
- Your window seat is made at our workshop, shaped to the window. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The seat is fitted in your home and checked so the lids and drawers run well.
Getting ready for fitting day

Common questions about window seats
Can you fit furniture in a home close to South Kenton station?
Yes. We cover all of Brent and the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Do you make window seats for homes in Preston?
Yes, Preston is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Brent and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
What if my walls and floors are out of level?
Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so it sits tight to the room.
What is a window seat made from?
We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The frame and seat top are birch plywood, which is strong and holds screws well, while the fronts and grilles are MDF, which paints well. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.
Why bespoke in Preston?
Standard storage benches come in set sizes. Bespoke seats are made to the size of the space, so nothing is wasted, with drawers, a lift-up lid or a mix below. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in a few set depths, so they can stick out too far or waste space behind. With fitted furniture, the depth is chosen for the room.
We do not publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.
Why us?
- Made for your room, not a standard size
- Scribed to uneven walls
- We visit, measure and talk through the design before we quote
- Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
Read our comparison of bespoke and off-the-shelf or what a quote should include.
When is bespoke worth it?
If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
Window seats for homes in Preston
Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 55% of the housing in the area around Preston, with about 18% built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Preston include Church of the Ascension (Grade II), under half a mile east, and Windermere Public House (Grade II), about 0.6 miles west. If your own home is listed, works inside that affect its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. About 55% of homes in the neighbourhood around Preston date from between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Many houses of that era have bay windows, natural places for a window seat.
Living in a block of flats near South Kenton station? Then it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. Close to Preston Park? Window seats can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. For a family home near Preston Park Primary School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.

Pricing window seats in Preston
What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. The main factors are:
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- How square the room is
- Parking near your home
- How many doors and drawers there are
Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.
Before the design visit
There is no need for exact sizes or plans. It’s enough to send:
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- Where you live, with the postcode
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, get in touch through our contact form.
