Caring for painted furniture

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Check stairs, hallways and lifts for access
  • Wipe up spills promptly
  • Know your appliance sizes early
  • List what needs a home in the kitchen

Use the cooker hood or open a window when cooking, to keep steam off the cabinets. Good ventilation helps paintwork last.

Talk to your plumber, electrician and a Gas Safe engineer early. The pipes, cables and gas supply need to suit the layout, and it is easier when everyone works from the same design.

How we make bespoke kitchens for Cubitt Town

We make kitchens to fit the room, not a catalogue of set sizes. Every unit is sized from careful measurements taken during the design visit, so there are no filler panels covering awkward gaps. You decide the layout, the storage and the colour with us, and the kitchen is built in our workshop before it’s fitted. People usually come to us about a kitchen planned around your appliances and open shelves with cupboards below; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

A large share of the homes around Cubitt Town date from 2000 onwards, and some came with kitchens that suit the building more than the people living in it. Cabinets made for your room can take its place, with the worktop, sink and appliances you choose. Other trades handle the plumbing, gas and electrics.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Why people ask for bespoke kitchens in Cubitt Town

Many people come to us because a standard kitchen does not suit their room. Off-the-shelf cabinets come in set widths, leaving gaps at the ends and above. Bespoke cabinets are built to the real sizes instead.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • An island where space allows
  • A kitchen that fits an uneven room
  • A kitchen finished in your colours
  • A painted dresser for the kitchen

Queen's House, about 1.1 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top.

Questions we’re often asked

I live in a flat in Cubitt Town. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Does a conservation area in or near Cubitt Town affect fitted furniture?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

What are the kitchen cabinets made of?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray painting or hand painting. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

How long does fitting take?

How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We will talk it through at the design visit.

Can I choose my own worktop and appliances?

We plan the kitchen around the worktop, sink and appliances you choose. It’s useful to choose them before the design is final, and the quote confirms what’s included.

Do you do the plumbing and electrics?

No. We’re carpenters, so we make and fit the cabinets. Your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics, and we design around where their work goes.

Kitchens in Cubitt Town: local notes

In the area around Cubitt Town, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 67%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 17%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Cubitt Town include Christ Church (Grade II*), about 0.6 miles south, and Carnegie Library (Grade II), under half a mile south-west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. More than half of the homes in the streets around Cubitt Town (about 67%) were built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Kitchens in homes built since 2000 are often open-plan, with stud walls, so the cabinet fixings are chosen for the board.

For families living near Cubitt Town Infants' School, a kitchen with a spot for school letters and lunch boxes makes mornings easier. Close to Mudchute Park and Farm? A cupboard by the back door for boots and coats can be built in with the kitchen.

When is bespoke worth it?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Made-to-measure kitchens or ready-made?

Ready-made ranges rarely include a larder or dresser that fits a particular alcove. Bespoke joinery can be made for the exact space, painted to match the rest of the kitchen. Newer homes often have compact rooms where standard furniture leaves awkward gaps, and fitted furniture uses that space. It works around service boxing too.

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, written once we’ve measured up.

Why choose us

  • Fitted tight to walls that aren’t straight
  • Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
  • Designed for the room you have
  • Made in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood

Take a look at how bespoke compares with ready-made and how to compare quotes.

How fitting works for bespoke kitchens

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Newer blocks often have concierge desks, entry systems and rules on lift booking, so it helps to sort them out ahead of time. The furniture is built in sections that fit the lift and doorways.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room and how you cook.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and go through the layout, storage and finish, including where the sink and appliances will go.
  3. You get a quote in writing for the cabinets, with the materials and finish set out.
  4. The units are made and finished in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the kitchen in your home, while your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician handle the plumbing, gas and electrics. We do not arrange those trades, so it is useful to book them early.

Before fitting day

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
