Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If your street in Stoke Newington joins a main road, it’s worth telling us during the design visit. We’ll plan where the van can stop.

Bespoke kitchens in Stoke Newington

An island can be a good addition where there’s space for one. There needs to be enough clear floor around it to open doors and move about, and in a narrow kitchen an island can make the room harder to use. If the room is narrow, we will suggest other layouts. If you’re living with a kitchen finished in your colours and a kitchen island with room around it, kitchens made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

Narrow hallways in Victorian and Edwardian terraces set limits on how long a cabinet or panel can be. Around Stoke Newington, a large share of homes were built before 1919, so the route to the kitchen is measured at the measuring visit. Long runs are made in sections and joined on site.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

What prompts bespoke kitchens in Stoke Newington

Many people come to us because a standard kitchen does not suit their room. Off-the-shelf cabinets come in set widths, leaving gaps at the ends and above. Bespoke cabinets are built to the real sizes from the start.

We are often asked to help with:

  • A kitchen finished in your colours
  • A kitchen island with room around it
  • A painted dresser for the kitchen
  • Cabinets built around the appliances you choose

If you live near Abney Park, a tall cupboard for outdoor things can be part of the kitchen design.

Before you choose who makes it

  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Have they thought about parking near you?

Where other trades come in

Before you plan the job, it is useful to know what we don’t do:

  • Wiring for appliances and lights
  • Plumbing, which is for your plumber
  • Connecting a gas hob or cooker

If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Islands where space allows
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Larders and dressers
  • Birch plywood

From workshop to your room

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared, as we will have talked about at the measuring visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

  1. You let us know about the kitchen and where it is in your home.
  2. We visit to plan the layout and check how the cabinets will get into the room. Let us know about parking too, as a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. In our workshop we build the kitchen from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in pieces that suit the route in.
  5. The cabinets are fitted in your home with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish; plumbing, gas and electrics are for your plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

How to get a quote

You do not need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, tell us about the room on our contact form. The written quote follows the visit.

Advice

Tips worth knowing

None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Talk to your other trades in good time
  • Make sure an island won’t crowd the room
  • Check stairs, hallways and lifts for access
  • Have damp sorted before fitting

Doors are hung and adjusted when we fit them. Walls and floors shift slightly through the year, so hinges allow small adjustments later.

Choose your appliances before the design is finalised. We size the spaces around them, and changing them later can mean changing the units.

Common questions about bespoke kitchens

Will a conservation area stop me having bespoke kitchens fitted in Stoke Newington?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Stoke Newington?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You do. We agree the colour with you.

Can I choose my own worktop and appliances?

The worktop, sink and appliances are the ones you choose, and we design the cabinets around them. Your quote sets out what’s included.

Is there room for an island in my kitchen?

Where space allows, yes. There has to be comfortable space on every side, and we check this at the measuring visit. In a narrow kitchen, a longer run or a peninsula may suit better.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
