Fitted cupboards in Isle of Dogs, Tower Hamlets

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make fitted cupboards for homes in Isle of Dogs, each designed at a visit to your home.

About our fitted cupboards in Isle of Dogs

A fitted cupboard is built for one space and nowhere else. It can rise to the ceiling or stop at a height that suits the room, and it follows the walls rather than leaving gaps around them. We fit them in hallways, on landings, in utility and boot rooms and in alcoves, with the inside planned around what you want to store. If your home has floor-to-ceiling storage in a flat and a utility room with proper storage, that’s what fitted cupboards are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

A large share of the homes around Isle of Dogs date from 2000 onwards, and in a newer house with a converted loft, the eaves and slopes are worth using. For lofts, the storage goes into spaces that are already converted or boarded. Elsewhere, fitted storage is fixed to plasterboard walls with fixings that suit it.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

What prompts fitted cupboards in Isle of Dogs

Alcoves and odd corners are another reason. We often build into recesses, corridor ends and corners that standard furniture cannot use, and make them useful.

A few of the things people ask us to solve include:

  • A boiler cupboard that keeps access clear
  • Cupboards that suit a period house
  • Storage for towels and bedding
  • Tall cupboards where space is short

If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Nicholas, hallway recesses and alcoves are where fitted cupboards earn their keep.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Will the quote be in writing?

FAQs: fitted cupboards in Isle of Dogs

Will a conservation area stop me having fitted cupboards fitted in Isle of Dogs?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Isle of Dogs?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to tell us about parking during the design visit.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

The furniture is built in sections. That’s why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways during the design visit.

Is it possible to build a cupboard around a boiler?

Yes. The cupboard is built around the space and ventilation the boiler’s instructions ask for, and the doors open fully for servicing. Work on the boiler itself is a job for a Gas Safe engineer.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to let us in. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

How fitting day works

When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Stud walls can carry pipes and cables, so we check before drilling, and heavy pieces are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor. Any new sockets or plumbing are for your electrician or plumber, ideally before fitting day.

  1. To begin, fill in our short enquiry form; a brief note on the space and anything in it that needs access is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure and plan the cupboard so meters, fuse boards and any boiler stay easy to reach. Boiler work itself is for a Gas Safe engineer.
  3. A quote in writing follows with the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with vents and access panels where they’re needed.
  5. The cupboards are fitted and set level, and we check the access with you.

Before fitting day

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Arranging a design visit

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, tell us about the room on our contact form and let us know about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

Advice

What fitted cupboards can’t fix

Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we do not do:

  • Building work or structural changes
  • Plumbing for washing machines or sinks (your plumber)
  • Changes to meters, which are for your supplier or an electrician

If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

Materials and parts

  • Ventilated doors
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood
  • Adjustable shelves

Before and after fitting day

People planning fitted cupboards often ask about these. They help whatever the room:

  • Mention any parking or lift rules
  • List what you want to store before the design visit
  • Go easy on new doors for a while
  • Think about how the cupboards will get in

Over time, you may want to move a shelf or add a rail. Where we’ve fitted adjustable shelves, you can move them as needed as your storage changes.

Leasehold flats can have rules about alterations, so check your lease first. Your lease is something to check with whoever manages the building, and it’s best done early.

What it is made from

Birch plywood

For heavily loaded cupboards, birch plywood makes a sturdy carcass, such as a linen or utility cupboard.

Plinths and scribe strips

A plinth lifts the cupboard off the floor and hides adjustable feet. Scribe strips close the gap to a wall that isn’t straight.
