Bespoke kitchens for homes in The Hale

In the streets around The Hale, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 58%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 14%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Near the centre of The Hale, Historic England’s list includes John Keble Church (Grade II), less than half a mile south. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. About 55% of households in the neighbourhood around The Hale live in detached or semi-detached houses, based on Census 2021. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.

For families living near Mathilda Marks-Kennedy Jewish Primary School, a tall cupboard by the door can take school bags and coats as part of the kitchen. Living in a block of flats near Mill Hill Broadway station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Bespoke kitchens for homes in The Hale

Our bespoke kitchens are fitted in The Hale and all over London. It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through the layout, followed by a quote. The cabinets are made at our workshop and fitted in your home. How long fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and your quote sets out the fitting days. If your home has an island where space allows and a larder for food and small appliances, kitchens made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.

Around The Hale, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the original kitchen was probably small, and many have since been extended or opened up. The cabinets are designed for the room as it is today.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Where other trades come in

We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Connecting sinks, taps and dishwashers
  • Electrics, sockets and lighting (your electrician)
  • Gas work, which is for a Gas Safe registered engineer

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can fill in our short enquiry form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

What it is made from

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood
  • Islands where space allows
  • Larders and dressers
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish

What happens on fitting day

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. The time the fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so any section going up there is sized for them. Elsewhere in the house, the route is usually more generous. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. It starts with a short note from you about the room.
  2. At the design visit we measure the kitchen and the route in, including stairs, doorways and any lift.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the cabinets, materials and finish.
  4. The cabinets are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, sized to come in through your doors.
  5. We carry everything in and fit the cabinets, while your plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics.

Before fitting day

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Ask for a quote

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, use our contact form.

Your questions about bespoke kitchens in The Hale

Is The Hale in the area you cover for bespoke kitchens?

Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London, and The Hale is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.

I live near Mill Hill Broadway station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room.

Can I have a kitchen island?

If the room is big enough, yes. We measure at the measuring visit to check there is room to walk round it and open doors. If it would crowd the kitchen, we’ll say so.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We will also ask about access and parking.

The problems bespoke kitchens solve

Uneven walls and floors make standard kitchens hard to fit. Gaps and wavy lines are hard to hide, while scribed and levelled cabinets keep the lines true.

A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:

  • More storage in a small kitchen
  • A painted kitchen in a colour you choose
  • A painted dresser for the kitchen
  • A central island in a larger kitchen

If you live near Stoneyfields Park, a cupboard by the back door for boots and coats can be built in with the kitchen.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Tips worth knowing

None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:

  • Make sure an island will not crowd the room
  • Pick the oven, fridge and dishwasher first
  • Share the layout with your other trades
  • Wipe up spills promptly

Doors are hung and adjusted when we fit them. Walls and floors shift slightly through the year, so hinges allow small adjustments later.

Choose your appliances before the design is finalised. Their sizes shape the cabinets, and changing them later can mean changing the units.

Pricing bespoke kitchens in The Hale

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • How square the room is
  • The number of doors and drawers

Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.

What we need to know

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Examples of the look you are after
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • What the furniture needs to hold

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a written quote for you to look over. To arrange the visit, send us a few details through our contact form.
