Fitted Wardrobes in Nine Elms

Fitted wardrobes in Nine Elms: floor-to-ceiling wardrobes built to the shape of your bedroom. We make each piece in our workshop and fit it in your home, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

  • Wasted space beside the chimney breast
  • An awkward slope in a loft bedroom
  • Several odd pieces where one run of storage would do

How we make fitted wardrobes for Nine Elms

In older bedrooms, the chimney breast alcoves are often the obvious place for clothes. Wardrobes in both alcoves leave the chimney breast on show. We meet the picture rail and cornice neatly, or cut around them. Typical reasons to get in touch are several odd pieces where one run of storage would do and too little room for clothes, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

A large share of the homes around Nine Elms date from 2000 onwards, and a newer bedroom seldom comes with storage that fits how you live. We design fitted wardrobes around the window, the radiator and the door, so the room still works. Where the flat is in a managed block, check the rules on deliveries and lifts before fitting day.

The quote comes in writing, so there is time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

What it is made from

Hand-painted finish

With hand painting, you see the colour in your own room’s light as it goes on. Joins and scribed edges are painted in the same coats.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is stiff and grips screws firmly, which suits wardrobe carcasses, shelves and drawers. Its layered edge can be painted or left on show.

Flats, conversions and lettings

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so let us know about it during the design visit.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

What happens on fitting day

Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Newer homes often have stud walls, so on fitting day heavy pieces go into the studs or stand on the floor. Floors are protected throughout, as many newer homes have finished floors that mark easily.

  1. You contact us with some details about the room and the wardrobes you’d like.
  2. We visit to measure up and plan the doors, rails, shelves and drawers with you.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the design and the paint finish.
  4. The wardrobes are made in sections in our workshop. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the wardrobes go in, are levelled and scribed, and the doors are hung.

Advice

Caring for painted furniture

Getting the most from fitted wardrobes starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Let us know about the lift and stairs in your block
  • Check how much space there is in front for doors to open
  • Empty the area where we’ll be working
  • In a leasehold flat, read the lease first

With sliding doors, vacuum the track now and then. Clear anything that falls into it.

Don’t overload a single rail or shelf. Shelves and rails are sized for everyday loads, so mention anything unusually heavy when we plan.

Nine Elms homes and fitted wardrobes

Homes built since 2000 make up about 43% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Nine Elms, with about 28% built before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted wardrobes are fixed and fitted. Within a mile of the centre of Nine Elms, 17 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If your street in Nine Elms joins a main road, it’s worth telling us at the measuring visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

If your home is one of the older houses near All Saints, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. Near listed buildings like Battersea Power Station, less than half a mile west of the centre of Nine Elms, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. The wider area includes historic houses such as Carlyle's House, about 1.1 miles west. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.

Why bespoke in Nine Elms?

Large flat-pack wardrobes can be hard to build in a small bedroom. Our wardrobes are made in sections sized to get up the stairs, into the lift and through the doors, then put together in the room. Large off-the-shelf pieces can make a small room feel smaller, while fitted furniture, painted in a colour that suits the walls, reads as part of the room.

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Questions from Nine Elms

Will a conservation area stop me having fitted wardrobes fitted in Nine Elms?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in Nine Elms?

Yes. We cover all of Wandsworth and the rest of London, and Nine Elms is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Can a fitted wardrobe go against a cold wall?

Yes. Wardrobes on outside walls are designed with ventilation behind and inside, in moisture-resistant MDF. If there is damp on the wall already, it should be sorted first.

How do I get a quote?

Just use our contact form. Rough measurements and a few pictures help, and then we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design.

Who chooses the colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it’s set out in the quote.

Do you do the electrics?

No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design.
