How we price bespoke kitchens
Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. These are the things that affect it:
- Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
- Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.
Helping us understand the room
Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- Rough measurements: width, height and depth
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- Examples of the look you are after
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.
How we make bespoke kitchens for Oval
Kitchens in period houses bring their own challenges. Walls lean, corners are not square and floors slope, sometimes noticeably over a single run of units. We scribe the cabinets to the walls and set them level on adjustable feet or a plinth, so the worktop you choose can sit level. We make kitchens from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the things people most often want solved are a kitchen that fits an uneven room and cabinets for a narrow kitchen.
With most households around Oval in purpose-built flats, mansion blocks and modern blocks are both possible. Mansion block kitchens often have tall ceilings and walls that are not straight, while newer flats tend to have plasterboard walls and service boxing. Wall cabinets are fixed to suit the wall.
If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Made-to-measure kitchens in Oval
The biggest shares of homes in the area around Oval were built since 2000 (about 32%) and before 1919 (about 26%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. 24 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Oval. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. All of London, Lambeth included, is inside the ULEZ. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Oval is covered by it. We go through parking and access during the design visit.
If your home is one of the older houses near Calvary Church of God in Christ, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true. For a flat near Vauxhall station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. For a family home near St Stephen's Church of England Primary School, planning a kitchen around family routines, with a place for school things, pays off.
Oval is about 1 mile south of Stockwell, part of the London Borough of Lambeth. Homes in Oval are part of the area we cover for bespoke kitchens, as part of our work in every London borough. Our work takes in places right across Lambeth.

From workshop to your room
However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. With little room to spare in a flat, pieces come in as they’re needed. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. Fixings are chosen for each wall, solid or plasterboard.
- You get in touch and let us know about the room and how you cook. It helps to know the worktop, sink and appliances you have in mind.
- At the design visit we measure the room and discuss the layout, storage and finish.
- We send a quote that sets out the design, materials and finish, for you to read through.
- The units are made and finished in our workshop.
- We fit the kitchen in your home, while your plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician handle the plumbing, gas and electrics. We don’t arrange those trades, so it helps to book them early.
Preparing the room
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

It’s useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space. To send them over, fill in our short enquiry form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.
Advice
Your questions about bespoke kitchens in Oval
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Oval?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.
My home in Oval is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Kitchens are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Is there room for an island in my kitchen?
If the room is big enough, yes. At the design visit we check the clearances around it, and suggest another layout if it would crowd the room.
Do you handle the gas and electrics for the kitchen?
No. We make and fit the kitchen cabinets. Your plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics, and we design around where their work goes.
Who chooses the colour?
The choice is yours, and it is agreed with you before painting. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you’ve chosen.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a written quote.
Boards, parts and paint
Plinths and scribe strips
Scribing is how cabinets meet a wall that isn’t flat, closing any gaps.
Spray-painted finish
A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, giving a smooth, even surface.
When is bespoke worth it?
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
Honest limits
We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:
- Any work on the gas supply
- Painting the walls around the kitchen
- Plumbing, which is for your plumber
