How fitting works for bespoke kitchens

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so it helps to tell us at the measuring visit what’s outside. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturdays are possible by arrangement.

  1. You contact us about a bespoke kitchen.
  2. At the design visit we plan the kitchen and talk about colours and finish.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the finish agreed.
  4. We make the kitchen in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF, which suits kitchens and takes paint well, and birch plywood.
  5. The kitchen is fitted and scribed to the walls, with any hand painting done in the room.
  6. Plumbing, gas and electrics are for your plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician; new paintwork needs gentle use while it cures.

How to prepare

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Advice

How we make bespoke kitchens for Brockley

We often use moisture-resistant MDF in kitchens, because it stays stable and takes paint beautifully. For drawer boxes and shelves, birch plywood is a good choice. The finish is spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in colours agreed with you. Typical reasons to get in touch are cabinets that suit lean and sloping walls and a painted dresser for the kitchen; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Brockley, a chimney breast often survives in the kitchen, and it can frame a range cooker or a dresser. A blocked chimney still needs ventilating, and any damp is sorted before cabinets go against it. Other trades handle the plumbing, gas and electrics.

The quote comes in writing, so there is time to read it properly. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Questions from Brockley

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Brockley?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Will a conservation area stop me having bespoke kitchens fitted in Brockley?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

How long will the kitchen take to fit?

It depends on the kitchen. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

Do you cover areas outside London?

No. We only take on work in London.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

It is made in sections, sized for the route along with the room itself. At the design visit, we measure the route as well as the room.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s easy to buy.

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

Larder and dresser units

Dressers suit many period kitchens, and each is made for its wall.

Plinths and scribe strips

A plinth hides adjustable feet and lets the cabinets sit level. Scribe strips follow the wall.

When you need someone else

It is worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Knocking through or rebuilding walls
  • Painting the walls around the kitchen
  • Gas work, which is for a Gas Safe registered engineer

If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.

Materials and parts

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood
  • Islands where space allows
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Larders and dressers

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Made-to-measure kitchens in Brockley

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Brockley were built before 1919 (about 57%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 12%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The Brockley Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Brockley. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house does not normally need permission. The council can confirm if you are not sure. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If your street in Brockley joins a main road, it’s worth telling us at the design visit. We will plan where the van can stop.

If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Hilda, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Hilda, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If you live in a flat close to Crofton Park station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.
