Bespoke kitchens in Shepherd's Bush

Our bespoke kitchens are fitted in Shepherd's Bush and all over London. It starts with a design visit to measure and go through the layout, then a quote in writing. Once agreed, the kitchen is made in our workshop and fitted in your home. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote, so you can plan around it. Typical reasons to get in touch are making the most of a galley kitchen and a dresser that suits a period house, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Older homes normally have generous ceiling heights, and a large share of the homes around Shepherd's Bush date from then. Kitchen cabinets can go higher, with tall larders and top cupboards for occasional things. Moisture-resistant MDF suits a kitchen, and the paint finish is agreed in your quote.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Shepherd's Bush homes and bespoke kitchens

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Shepherd's Bush were built before 1919 (about 67%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 14%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Near the centre of Shepherd's Bush, Historic England’s list includes Church of St John the Baptist (Grade I), less than half a mile east, and Debenham House (Grade I), about 0.5 miles east. If your own home is listed, works inside that affect its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. About 33% of households in the streets around Shepherd's Bush live in flats in converted or shared houses, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.

For a family home near Addison Primary School, a tall cupboard by the door can take school bags and coats as part of the kitchen. The wider area includes historic houses such as Leighton House, about 0.9 miles south-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top. Living in a block of flats near Shepherds Bush station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Questions we’re often asked

Can you make bespoke kitchens for a home in Shepherd's Bush?

Yes. We cover all of Hammersmith and Fulham and the rest of London, and Shepherd's Bush is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

My house in Shepherd's Bush is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

What materials do you use for kitchens?

MDF for smooth painted parts and birch plywood for drawer boxes and shelves. We spray paint in the workshop or hand paint, in colours agreed with you.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

A bespoke kitchen takes more planning than picking units from a range. In return, the storage, layout and finish are designed for you. Standard units assume square rooms, and period homes seldom have them, so it leaves gaps at the wall, tilts on sloping floors or sits awkwardly against skirting and picture rails. Fitted pieces follow the wall and sit level.

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Where other trades come in

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:

  • Structural changes to the room
  • New sockets or circuits
  • Painting the walls around the kitchen

If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Birch plywood
  • Islands where space allows
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Larders and dressers

How fitting day works

On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections made in our workshop, one at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so kitchens are made in sections sized to get through. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the room and how you cook.
  2. We visit to measure the room and go through the layout, the storage and where the appliances will sit.
  3. You receive a written quote for the kitchen cabinets. Plumbing, gas and electrics are not part of it: those are for your plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician.
  4. We build the cabinets, doors and drawer fronts in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cabinets in your home, working around your plumber, your electrician and a Gas Safe engineer.

Before fitting day

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s easy to buy.

Looking after your furniture

Getting the most from bespoke kitchens starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Let us know about parking at the measuring visit
  • Measure the route into the kitchen
  • Make sure walls are dry before cabinets go in
  • Share the layout with your other trades

If a hand-painted door gets a chip, it can be touched in. Spray-painted finishes are smooth and even, and clean easily with a soft cloth. It’s worth keeping a record of the colours used.

Think about how the cabinets will get in. We make the cabinets in sections that fit through the doors and up the stairs, so let us know about tight turns or small lifts.
