Fitted Cupboards in South Hampstead

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make fitted cupboards for homes in South Hampstead, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Cupboards for a utility or boot room
  • Tidying away the gas and electricity meters
  • Cupboards that suit a period house

Fitted cupboards in South Hampstead: what you get

Few walls in an older house are truly straight, and floors and ceilings can be out of level too. Every cupboard is scribed, trimmed by hand to meet the wall, then set level on adjustable feet or a plinth. We work around skirting, coving and picture rails, so the cupboard looks as if it has always been there. We make fitted cupboards from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are cupboards that suit a period house and a cupboard for the meters with easy access.

In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around South Hampstead, the space under the stairs in a terraced house often holds the gas meter, the electricity meter or the fuse board. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so the design keeps them accessible. Bays and sash windows in period houses are natural spots for a window seat.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Caring for painted furniture

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. A few pointers help:

  • Make a note of what needs a home
  • Go easy on new doors for a while
  • Measure the route into the room as well as the room
  • Keep boiler vents and meter access clear

Keep the way to the meters and fuse board clear. Avoid packing things in front of the meters, so engineers and meter readers can get to them quickly.

Keep boilers, meters and fuse boards in mind from the start. They affect where doors, panels and vents go, and it’s easiest to plan for them at the start.

Older homes tend to have tricky recesses and uneven walls, which is where fitted cupboards help, with each one scribed to the wall.

Winfield House, about 0.9 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. Materials and finishes

Plinths and scribe strips

These details are what make a cupboard look part of an older house.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting can be done in your home, after the cupboards are fitted. It’s easy to touch up later.

What happens on fitting day

At the end, we tidy up. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and answer any questions. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so it helps to let neighbours know about fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You tell us where the cupboards should go and what they need to hold, including anything tricky like a boiler or meter.
  2. We visit to measure and check how level the floor and walls are.
  3. A quote follows, setting out the design and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. The cupboards are made and finished in our workshop.
  5. Fitting day: the cupboards are fitted and trimmed to the room. A hand-painted finish is applied on site, if you chose one.

Advice

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, after checking the walls during the design visit.

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

Common questions about fitted cupboards

Can you fit fitted cupboards to the uneven walls of an older house in South Hampstead?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

I live in a flat in South Hampstead. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Fitted cupboards are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Can I send photos ahead of the visit?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. You can send them when you send us a few details through our contact form.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we will see what we can do.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
