Made-to-measure kitchens or ready-made?
Many off-the-shelf kitchens use chipboard carcasses with a printed or wrapped finish. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, painted in colours you choose, finished to suit the room. Flats tend to have walls interrupted by doors, radiators and sockets, so off-the-shelf widths rarely fill the gaps. Fitted furniture is made for the spaces that are left.
Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. It is useful to talk about parking at the design visit, so we can plan for it.
Why us?
- Designed for the room you have
- Fitted tight to walls that aren’t straight
- Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
- Saturdays by arrangement

Bespoke kitchens in Hackney: what you get
Many people want a tall larder for food, tins and small appliances. We can build larders with shelves, drawers or racks inside the doors, sized to what you keep in them. In an alcove or at the end of a run, it can use space that would otherwise be wasted. If you are living with extra cupboard space and tall larder storage, that’s what kitchens are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
Around Hackney, most households live in purpose-built flats, and many blocks have rules on lift booking, deliveries and working hours. Checking with the managing agent early keeps the day running smoothly. Your lease may require consent for a new kitchen, so it is worth checking.
A written quote follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
What happens on fitting day
You will not need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Where there is no lift, each section is sized to be carried up the stairs safely. The tightest landing sets the largest piece. The pieces are assembled in the flat.
- You get in touch and describe the kitchen you want.
- At the design visit we plan the kitchen and talk about colours and finish.
- Your written quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish.
- We make the kitchen in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF, which suits kitchens and takes paint well, and birch plywood.
- We fit the cabinets in your home; a hand-painted finish is applied on site and is easy to touch up later.
- Treat new paint gently while it cures; the plumbing, gas and electrics are done by your own plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician.
Before fitting day
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
Arranging a design visit
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we have measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, drop us a line using the contact form.

Questions we are often asked
Is Hackney in the area you cover for bespoke kitchens?
Yes. We cover the whole of London, all 32 boroughs and the City of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
What happens when you come to measure?
It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a quote in writing.
How long will the kitchen take to fit?
The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. We will talk it through at the measuring visit.
Will a bespoke kitchen suit my uneven floor?
Yes. Each cabinet is trimmed to the wall and levelled, to give a level line for the worktop. It is one of the main reasons people choose bespoke in an older house.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.
How it is made
Spray-painted finish
For a sleek look, spray painting works well, and it is done before fitting.
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish can be done on site after fitting. It’s easy to touch up later.
Flats, conversions and lettings
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them during the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
Bespoke kitchens for homes in Hackney
About 33% of the homes in the area around Hackney went up before 1919, and about 24% between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. 15 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central Hackney. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Controlled parking zones cover much of inner London, and each borough runs its own. A van working in Hackney will normally need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension arranged through the council, which often needs notice. Parking is worth mentioning during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Close to Clapton Park? A tall cupboard for outdoor things can be part of the kitchen design. Near listed buildings like Church of St John of Jerusalem, less than half a mile south of the centre of Hackney, older homes may keep original joinery that kitchens can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If you live in a period home close to Church of St Luke, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top.
Hackney is in the London Borough of Hackney, about 2 miles south-west of Shoreditch. Wherever you are in Hackney, it works the same way: a design visit, a quote in writing, furniture made in our workshop and fitting in your home. We cover places right across the rest of London, from the busiest high streets to quiet residential roads.
Every home in E9, E8, E3 and E5 is within our area for bespoke kitchens, from the main roads to the quieter streets. You will find streets here like Homerton High Street, Primrose Square and St John's Church Road, and homes on each of them are within our area for bespoke kitchens. Hackney is near the A107 and B113; on busy main roads, unloading kitchens takes a little planning. If you’re just outside Hackney, we also cover Homerton (1 mile north), Lower Clapton (1 mile north), Hackney Central (1 mile west), London Fields (1 mile south-west) and Cambridge Heath (1 mile south-west). Elsewhere in the rest of London, we also cover Shoreditch (2 miles south-west), Hoxton (2 miles south-west), West Hackney (2 miles north-west), Stoke Newington (2 miles north-west), Stamford Hill (2 miles north-west) and Upper Clapton (2 miles north).
