Homerton Bespoke Kitchens

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make bespoke kitchens for homes in Homerton, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • A kitchen that fits an uneven room
  • An island where space allows
  • A kitchen planned around your appliances

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Bespoke kitchens in Homerton: what you get

A bespoke kitchen is built around the room you have. Each cabinet is made to the real measurements of your walls, floor and ceiling, so the runs fit neatly from wall to wall. You decide the layout, the storage and the colour with us, and the kitchen is built in our workshop before it’s fitted. We make kitchens from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the things people most often want solved are open shelves with cupboards below and cabinets built around the appliances you choose.

Purpose-built flats are home to most households around Homerton, and in a flat, the kitchen is often small or open to the living space. Cabinets made to the room’s exact widths make the most of every wall. Everything is built in sections that fit the route into the flat.

Our quotes are written in plain words. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, all taken from the design visit.

Sutton House, about 0.3 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true.

Why people ask for bespoke kitchens in Homerton

Uneven walls and floors make standard kitchens hard to fit. Gaps and wavy lines are hard to hide, while scribed and levelled cabinets keep the lines true.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • A painted dresser for the kitchen
  • Cabinets built around the appliances you choose
  • Extra cupboard space
  • Cabinets that suit lean and sloping walls

If you live near Millfields Park, a tall cupboard for outdoor things can be part of the kitchen design.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Whether they measure the room themselves

How fitting works for bespoke kitchens

Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Loading near a block of flats can take some planning, so tell us about bays, permits or any loading area at the design visit. Once inside, the sections are joined and fixed with fixings that suit the wall. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. To begin, use our contact form; a brief note on the room and the kitchen you have in mind is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure the room and go through the layout, the storage and where the appliances will sit.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the kitchen cabinets.
  4. We build the cabinets, doors and drawer fronts in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day the cabinets go in, scribed and set level, ready for your plumber, electrician and Gas Safe registered engineer to do their part.

Before we arrive

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Keep pets in another room while we work

Getting a quote

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Tips worth knowing

Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:

  • Measure the route into the kitchen
  • Let us know about parking at the design visit
  • Talk to your other trades in good time
  • Give the paint time to cure fully

Use the cooker hood or open a window when cooking, to keep steam off the cabinets. Ventilation helps the whole kitchen.

Have any damp sorted before the kitchen goes in. Damp behind units can lead to mould, particularly on external walls.

Honest limits

We make and fit furniture, and we don’t do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Knocking through or rebuilding walls
  • Moving water or waste pipes
  • New sockets or circuits

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can drop us a line using the contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. How it works.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Birch plywood
  • Larders and dressers
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Islands where space allows
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish

Common questions about bespoke kitchens

Is Homerton in the area you cover for bespoke kitchens?

Yes, we work across Hackney, Homerton included, and across the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Homerton?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking during the design visit.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a quote in writing.

Can I have a kitchen island?

If the room is big enough, yes. We measure at the design visit to check there’s room to walk round it and open doors. If it would crowd the kitchen, we’ll say so.

Who chooses the colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

Getting it in is planned at the design visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.
