How fitting day works

You won’t need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and it is useful to have the room cleared beforehand. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.

  1. It starts when you tell us about the room, the floor it’s on and the wardrobes you want.
  2. At the design visit we plan the wardrobes with you and check the route in, including any lift or tight stair turn.
  3. A written quote follows with the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop the wardrobes are built in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, so each piece fits through the doors and round the landings.
  5. We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls and ceiling.

Before we arrive

Advice

Fitted wardrobes in Stoke Newington: what you get

Some bedrooms suit wardrobes that wrap around the bed, with tall cupboards either side and storage bridging over the headboard. In other rooms, the units sit either side of a window, sometimes with a dressing table or a window seat between them. We plan the layout so the room still feels open. If your home has an awkward slope in a loft bedroom and dusty space on top of the wardrobe, fitted wardrobes made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

With a large share of homes around Stoke Newington built before 1919, plenty of bedrooms have solid brick external walls. Those walls can be colder than internal ones, so wardrobes and storage on them are designed with ventilation behind and inside to help avoid condensation. Smaller back bedrooms in houses of that age are good places for fitted wardrobes.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the fitted wardrobe designed for your room, what it is made from and how it is finished, and it is what the workshop builds to.

Questions we’re often asked

I live in a flat in Stoke Newington. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Fitted wardrobes are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Stoke Newington?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit.

Should I send pictures?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.

What happens at the design visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too.

Can fitted wardrobes go either side of the bed?

Yes. Building around the bed uses a wall that often goes unused and can include bedside shelves. The bed size and room are measured when we visit.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.

Honest limits

We make and fit furniture, and we do not do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
  • Converting a loft (we build storage in lofts that are already converted)
  • Structural changes to the room

Materials and parts

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Hinged or sliding doors
  • Hanging rails, shelves and drawers
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood

What it’s made from

Birch plywood

Shelves inside a wardrobe carry folded clothes, shoes and boxes. Birch plywood helps keep them straight across wider sections.

Hanging rails

Long rails need support so they do not bend under heavy coats when it carries winter coats. We plan the rail lengths with that in mind.

Bedrooms in Stoke Newington: local notes

About 50% of the homes in the area around Stoke Newington went up before 1919, and about 18% between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The centre of Stoke Newington is within about a quarter of a mile of the Clissold Park Conservation Area. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house does not normally need permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 26% of households in the streets around Stoke Newington, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it is worth checking yours first.

If you live near Abney Park, keeping fitted wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright. For a family home near St Mary's Church of England Primary School, the inside of fitted wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

What prompts fitted wardrobes in Stoke Newington

For some, it’s about a calmer room. A run of painted doors from wall to wall looks quieter than several separate pieces and keeps everything out of sight.

Fitted wardrobes can help with:

  • Space under the eaves going to waste
  • Wasted space beside the chimney breast
  • Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall
  • Clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms

For an older house near Old Church of St Mary, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
