Bespoke Kitchens in Forest Gate

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on bespoke kitchens in Forest Gate starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.

  • A kitchen that fits an uneven room
  • Extra cupboard space
  • A layout for a small or tricky room

Is bespoke worth it?

Choosing bespoke means a design visit, a quote, workshop time and fitting, rather than ordering from a range. What you get is a kitchen planned around how you cook and live. Standard units assume square rooms, and period homes seldom have them, so you end up with gaps, wobbles and units that don’t meet the skirting. Fitted pieces follow the wall and sit level.

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That is reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.

Why choose us

  • Every London borough and the City of London covered
  • Finished by spray or by hand

About our bespoke kitchens in Forest Gate

We often use moisture-resistant MDF in kitchens, because it copes with a room that gets steamy. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well. The finish is spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in the colours you choose. Most enquiries start with extra cupboard space and cabinets built around the appliances you choose; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Forest Gate, many kitchens still have a chimney breast, which can be built around rather than fought. A blocked chimney still needs ventilating, and any damp is sorted before cabinets go against it. Other trades handle the plumbing, gas and electrics.

The furniture is made at our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

How fitting day works

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Hand painting, if that’s your finish, can follow the fitting.

  1. It starts with a short note from you about the room.
  2. At the design visit we measure the kitchen and the route in, including stairs, doorways and any lift. Tell us about parking too, as a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. The cabinets are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, sized to come in through your doors.
  5. The cabinets are fitted in your home with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish; plumbing, gas and electrics are for your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician.

Before we arrive

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

Advice

Do you need bespoke kitchens in Forest Gate?

A common reason is a room that ready-made units do not fit. Standard units are made in fixed sizes, and the gaps get filled with panels. Bespoke cabinets are built to the real sizes from the start.

Bespoke kitchens can help with:

  • A kitchen for a room that isn’t square
  • Extra cupboard space
  • A kitchen finished in your colours
  • A larder for food and small appliances

If you live near West Ham Park, a cupboard by the back door for boots and coats can be built in with the kitchen.

What to check before you book

  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • How parking will work on your street
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted

Before and after fitting day

People planning bespoke kitchens often ask about these. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:

  • Make a note of what you use every day
  • Deal with damp walls first
  • Make sure an island will not crowd the room
  • Measure the route into the kitchen

Don’t leave water sitting on painted cabinets, particularly near the sink. Even moisture-resistant materials last better when kept dry.

Damp walls should be dealt with before cabinets are fitted. Damp behind units can lead to mould, especially on a colder external wall.

Honest limits

Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we do not do:

  • Electrics, sockets and lighting (your electrician)
  • Structural changes to the room
  • Connecting sinks, taps and dishwashers

If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

Kitchens in Forest Gate homes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 68% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Forest Gate, with about 11% built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The Woodgrange Estate, Forest Gate Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Forest Gate. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you are not sure. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If your street in Forest Gate joins a main road, it is worth telling us at the design visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

If your home is one of the older houses near A Radical Church, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout. If your children go to Woodgrange Infant School or a school nearby, a kitchen with a spot for school letters and lunch boxes makes mornings easier.

Questions we’re often asked

My house in Forest Gate is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Forest Gate?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Will you travel outside London?

No. We work in London and nowhere else.

Do you cover Forest Gate?

Yes. We design and make bespoke kitchens for homes in Forest Gate, and the process is the same everywhere we go.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

It’s made in sections, sized for the route as well as the room. That is why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways during the design visit.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Usually not. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so check with the council first.
