Bespoke Kitchens in Upton Park
Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on bespoke kitchens in Upton Park starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.

Bespoke kitchens for homes in Upton Park
Some kitchens suit a dresser, with cupboards below and open shelves above, and it suits many period homes. We make dressers to fit the wall they stand against, scribed to follow it and painted to suit the room. Typical reasons to get in touch are a layout for a small or awkward room and extra cupboard space; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Ceilings in homes built before 1919 are often tall, and a large share of the homes around Upton Park date from then. That suits tall larder cupboards and wall cabinets taken up to the ceiling. Moisture-resistant MDF suits a kitchen, and the paint finish is agreed in your quote.
Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Fitting day, step by step
With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.
- We start with how you cook and what the kitchen needs to hold.
- At the design visit we measure the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the layout.
- A quote follows, covering the design and finish, ready for you to check.
- We build and finish the kitchen in our workshop.
- Fitting day: we fit the cabinets, and your plumber, electrician and a Gas Safe registered engineer handle the services.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
Starting with a design visit
A quote begins with some details from you: the room, rough measurements and some pictures if you have them. To send them, message us from the contact page. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a quote in writing.

The problems bespoke kitchens solve
Others want the kitchen to suit the age of the house. Painted cabinets, a dresser or a larder can sit well with original features and suit the house’s character.
Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:
- Room for everything in the kitchen
- Cabinets for a narrow kitchen
- An island where space allows
- Cabinets that suit lean and sloping walls
If your children go to St Edward's Catholic Primary School or a school nearby, a drawer set aside for lunch boxes and water bottles keeps mornings calmer.
Before you choose who makes it
- Have they thought about parking near you?
- Will they visit to measure before quoting?
- How the furniture will be finished, and where
- How they’ll get the furniture into the room
Flats, conversions and lettings
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit.
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We cannot advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Larders, dressers and tall cupboards are hard to find in standard sizes that suit an older room. We can build them to fit, painted to match the rest of the kitchen. Ready-made tall pieces have to be fixed to the wall for safety, and older walls of brick or lath and plaster make that harder than it looks. Fitted furniture is designed with the wall in mind.
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Questions we are often asked
My house in Upton Park is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?
Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.
Do you cover homes near Woodgrange Park station?
Yes. We cover all of Newham and the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room.
Do you do the plumbing and electrics?
No. We’re carpenters, so we make and fit the cabinets. Plumbing is done by your plumber, gas by a Gas Safe registered engineer and electrics by your electrician, and we plan the cabinets around their work.
How do you get large furniture into a flat?
It is made in sections, each one sized to fit the way in. That’s why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways at the measuring visit.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.
Tips worth knowing
People planning bespoke kitchens often ask about these. They’re worth knowing before and after fitting:
- Mention any parking or lift rules
- Have damp sorted before fitting
- Wipe up spills promptly
- Know your appliance sizes early
Let steam escape when you cook, as steam settling on cabinets over time is not good for any finish. Good ventilation helps paintwork last.
Have any damp sorted before the kitchen goes in. Damp behind units can lead to mould, especially on a colder external wall.
Kitchens in Upton Park homes
About 69% of the homes in the area around Upton Park went up before 1919, and about 11% between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Near the centre of Upton Park, Historic England’s list includes Boleyn Public House (Grade II), less than half a mile south, and Passmore Edwards Library (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south-west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. The share of homes built before 1919 around Upton Park, about 69%, is well above the figure for Newham as a whole, about 37%, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. So older-house details are more likely to come into the design of kitchens.
