Made-to-measure kitchens in Silvertown

About 84% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Silvertown went up since 2000, and about 13% between 1973 and 1999, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. There’s a conservation area within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Silvertown, going by Historic England’s data. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house does not normally need permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Purpose-built flats are more common around Silvertown than across Newham: about 89% of households, against about 44%, the 2021 Census shows. So the route in, from stairs to lifts, is part of the design.

If your children go to Britannia Village Primary School or a school nearby, a tall cupboard by the door can take school bags and coats as part of the kitchen. If you live in a flat close to Custom House station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

How we make bespoke kitchens for Silvertown

A larder cupboard can hold more than a run of wall units. We can build larders with shelves, drawers or racks inside the doors, sized to what you keep in them. Built into an alcove or the end of a wall, it puts awkward space to work. Most enquiries start with open shelves with cupboards below and making the most of a galley kitchen, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

A large number of homes around Silvertown date from 2000 onwards, and in newer homes the kitchen is typically part of an open-plan room. A bespoke kitchen can be planned to sit well in that space, with an island where there is room. Stud walls need wall cabinets fixed into the studs or with suitable fixings.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It sets out the kitchen designed for your room, what it’s made from and how it’s finished, and it is what the workshop builds to.

Caring for painted furniture

None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Let us know how parking works on your street
  • Treat new paintwork gently at first
  • Make a note of what you use every day
  • Make sure walls are dry before cabinets go in

Follow the appliance makers’ guidance for your oven, hob and dishwasher, and the care advice for your worktop.

Line up your other trades in good time. Their work and ours need to fit together, and it is easier when everyone works from the same design.

From workshop to your room

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. How long the fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Newer homes often have stud walls, so fixings go into the studs or use fixings made for the board. Floors are covered while we work, and dust is kept to a minimum.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the room and how you cook.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and plan the cabinets around the worktop, sink and appliances you choose.
  3. You receive a written quote for the kitchen cabinets. Plumbing, gas and electrics are not part of it: those are for your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician.
  4. We build the cabinets, doors and drawer fronts in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day the cabinets go in, scribed and set level, ready for your plumber, electrician and Gas Safe registered engineer to do their part.

Before fitting day

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Getting a quote

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

Why people ask for bespoke kitchens in Silvertown

Others want the kitchen to suit the age of the house. A painted kitchen with a dresser can feel at home in an older room and look as if they belong.

If you recognise any of these, it is worth talking to us:

  • A larder for food and small appliances
  • A painted kitchen in a colour you choose
  • A kitchen island with room around it
  • Spaces sized for your oven and fridge

If you live in a period home close to St Barnabas' Church, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

What bespoke kitchens cannot fix

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:

  • Knocking through or rebuilding walls
  • Any work on the gas supply
  • Making good walls and ceilings

If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

What it is made from

  • Larders and dressers
  • Islands where space allows
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood

What affects the price in Silvertown

Several things affect the price:

  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • How square the room is
  • Spray painting or hand painting

In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. Tell us about parking at the design visit, so we can plan for it.

What we need to know

A little information at the start saves time later. If you can, send:

  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Examples of the look you are after
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, along with rough measurements. To send them over, use our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

Your questions about bespoke kitchens in Silvertown

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Silvertown?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Does a conservation area in or near Silvertown affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Do you fit furniture for landlords?

Yes. We make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let as well as for householders. Access has to be agreed with the tenants.

Can you fit cabinets to walls that are not straight?

Yes. We scribe each cabinet to the wall and set it level on adjustable feet or a plinth, to give a level line for the worktop. It is one of the main reasons people choose bespoke in an older house.

Can you make bespoke kitchens for a home in Silvertown?

Yes. Our area is the whole of London: every borough and the City of London, Silvertown included.

Can I have a kitchen island?

If there is enough room, yes. There has to be comfortable space on every side, and we check this at the measuring visit. In a narrow kitchen, a longer run or a peninsula may suit better.
