TV and media units in Adelphi: what you get

TV units are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The finish is spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in the colour you prefer. We fit across Westminster and the rest of London once the design and quote are agreed. If your home has wasted space around the screen and a TV that looks out of place in the room, that’s what TV and media units are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

In a flat, one room often does the work of a living room, dining room and study. Around Adelphi, where most households live in purpose-built flats, TV and media units that use the height of the room help keep the floor clear. A shallow run on one wall can hold a lot without taking much floor.

Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Practical tips

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Plan open spaces for anything controlled by a remote
  • Decide where you’ll sit, so the screen height suits it
  • Check each box’s guidance on ventilation and clearances
  • Think about whether you will upgrade the screen

Painted finishes feel dry quickly but take longer to cure fully. At first, lift boxes and speakers into place rather than pushing them.

Keep ventilation gaps and open backs clear when you add equipment.

Common questions about TV and media units

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Adelphi?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Does a conservation area in or near Adelphi affect fitted furniture?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Will you travel outside London?

No. We only take on work in London.

What are your TV and media units made from?

Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF gives a smooth, stable surface for paint; birch plywood is strong and good for shelves and drawer boxes.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Can landlords use you for a rented flat?

Yes. We make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let as well as for householders. Access has to be agreed with the tenants for the visit and for fitting day.

Living-room carpentry in Adelphi: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 41% of the housing in the area around Adelphi, with about 26% built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how TV and media units are fixed and fitted. Within a mile of the centre of Adelphi, 38 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. A quarter or more of the homes in the area around Adelphi (about 26%) were built since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. In homes built since 2000, living rooms are often open-plan with stud walls, so TV and media units are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor.

If you live in a period home close to Savoy Chapel, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units. If your children go to St Clement Danes CofE Primary School or a school nearby, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design. Near listed buildings like Church of St Paul Covent Garden, under half a mile north of the centre of Adelphi, older homes may keep original joinery that TV and media units can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

Adelphi is in the City of Westminster, about 1 mile west of City of Westminster. We can visit homes in Adelphi on weekdays, or on a Saturday by prior arrangement. We cover places right across Westminster, large and small.

Every home in W1D, W1F and WC2H is covered for TV and media units. We cover homes on streets such as York Road, Drury Lane and Maiden Lane, whether you want TV and media units or another piece made for the room. Adelphi sits close to the A301 and A400. If your home is on one of them, tell us during the design visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. Nearby, we also make TV and media units in Covent Garden (1 mile north), Charing Cross (1 mile south-west), Aldwych (1 mile north-east), Seven Dials (1 mile north-west) and West End (1 mile north-west). Other parts of Westminster we cover include Paddington Green (2 miles west), Paddington (2 miles west), Connaught Village (2 miles west), Belgravia (2 miles south-west), Lisson Grove (2 miles north-west) and Westbourne (3 miles west).

What we don’t do

It’s useful to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Plastering or decorating around the unit
  • Structural changes to the wall
  • Connecting and setting up your equipment

If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room. How it works.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Cable routes
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Ventilated cabinets
  • Spray-painted finish

Fitting day, step by step

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Sections come into the flat in the order they’re fitted, so the flat doesn’t fill up. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. Fixings are chosen for each wall, solid or plasterboard.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the room and the unit you have in mind.
  2. At the design visit, we measure up and plan the screen space, cable routes and ventilation with you. New sockets or wiring are for your electrician, so it helps to have them in mind early.
  3. Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out.
  4. The unit is built in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, with the cable routes ready to use. We check the doors and shelves with you before we leave.

Before fitting day

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

Ask for a quote

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, particularly with rough sizes. To send them over, use our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Related advice

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Not every bought cabinet allows enough air for warm equipment. Ventilation is designed in where equipment sits. In a flat, every bit of floor counts, and standalone furniture uses more of it than it needs. Fitted furniture can go to the ceiling and fill a recess exactly, leaving more floor clear.

Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

How it is made

Spray-painted finish

The unit arrives already finished. Give the paint time to cure fully.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Wide panels around a screen need to stay flat. MDF gives smooth, even surfaces for painting with crisp edges.
