Loft storage for your home in Longlands
How we make loft storage for Longlands
A converted loft often has more storage space than it first seems. Our loft storage includes eaves cupboards, knee-wall drawers, wardrobes under sloping ceilings and dormer shelving, each shaped to the room. In Longlands, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. We make eaves cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and people most often get in touch about a loft room with too many jobs and a new loft conversion that needs storage.
Around Longlands, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. In a typical 1930s house, storage tends to hide in the bay, under the stairs and in the box room. Any meters or fuse board under the stairs stay accessible, and the storage is planned around them.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Is bespoke worth it?
If you only need a few boxes in a boarded loft, standalone shelving may be enough. A fitted design earns its place in a loft room you live in. At the design visit, we will tell you honestly which approach suits your loft. Walls in interwar houses are straighter than in older ones, but rarely perfect, so standalone furniture can still lean or leave gaps. Built-in pieces are adjusted to the room on site.
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.
Why choose Bespoke Carpentry in Longlands
- More than 300 projects completed
- Saturday work by prior arrangement
- We visit, measure and talk through the design before we quote
- A spray or hand-painted finish
What it costs
Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. These are the things that affect it:
- Parking and unloading on your street
- Spray painting or hand painting
- How many doors and drawers there are
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.
What we need to know
To give us a picture of the room, it’s useful to include:
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- Any ideas or images you’ve saved
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- Approximate measurements of the space

FAQs: loft storage in Longlands
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
I live near New Eltham station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Bexley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.
What materials do you use for loft storage?
Our loft storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then painted. Stable materials suit a loft, where temperatures can vary. Your quote confirms the materials and finish.
Who chooses the colour?
You choose it. We agree the colour with you, and it’s set out in the quote.
Do you do the electrics?
No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We’ll design around them.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, by arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

What else we make in Longlands
Longlands homes and loft storage
About 39% of the homes in the area around Longlands went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 22% between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The Chislehurst Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Longlands. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and Bexley sets its own rules. If parking near you is controlled, a visitor permit or a bay suspension may be needed, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. Tell us what the parking is like at the measuring visit.
If you live near Waring Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and eaves cupboards can give those things a place. Eltham Palace, about 2 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, sloping ceilings in a loft room suit wardrobes cut to the angle. For a family home near Longlands Primary School, eaves cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.

Flats, blocks and rented homes
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, once we have measured the way in.
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so let us know about it at the design visit.
How fitting works for loft storage
At the end, we tidy up. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
