Built-in bookshelves designed for your room

From workshop to your room

At the end, we tidy up. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. How long the fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. You contact us with a few details about the wall and your books. A rough idea of the wall and the books is plenty to start with.
  2. At the design visit, we measure the wall, check how it’s built and plan spans and depths with you, and talk about cupboards below.
  3. We send a written quote with the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the shelving in our workshop, sizing each shelf for what it carries. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and fixed to suit them. Fixings are chosen to suit brick, plaster or stud walls.

About our built-in bookshelves in World's End

A full bookcase is heavy, so the fixings matter. Each bookcase is fixed with fixings chosen for the wall, from solid brick to lath and plaster or plasterboard on studs. Loose plaster or a weak wall should be dealt with first. If your home has a home library or study and shelving that works with picture rails and cornices, built-in bookshelves made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

Plenty of semis and interwar houses have been extended at the back or had the back rooms knocked through, which matters around World's End, where homes like these are a big part of the housing. A long through room gives built-in bookshelves a whole wall to work with. New plasterboard in an extension and older brick or block in the original house take different fixings.

Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

How it’s made

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribe strips are trimmed on site to follow the walls and ceiling. This closes the gaps a straight bookcase would leave.

Moisture-resistant MDF

For cupboard doors below the shelves, MDF gives a flat, stable door. It has no grain to show through.

Pricing built-in bookshelves in World's End

What you pay depends on:

  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • The width and height of the space

In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. Tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan for it.

Before the design visit

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Your postcode and the borough

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Is bespoke worth it?

With off-the-shelf shelving, you’re limited to the maker’s finishes. Ours are painted in a colour agreed with you, so they can match the walls or stand out. Off-the-shelf units come in set widths, so a run along a wall normally ends with a gap, which fitted furniture avoids. It can use the full height too.

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Why us?

Built-in living-room furniture in World's End

About 51% of the homes in the streets around World's End went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 21% between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Part of World's End is in a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. About 64% of households in the area around World's End live in detached or semi-detached houses, based on Census 2021. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.

For a family home near Grange Park Primary School, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place. If you live in a flat close to Grange Park station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

World's End is in the London Borough of Enfield, about 3 miles south-east of Edmonton. We work across all London boroughs and the City of London, and World's End is part of that. We cover places right across Enfield, large and small.

Design visits and fitting in N21, EN2 and N14 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. Our area takes in homes on streets like Viga Road, Maxim Road and Vera Avenue, along with the roads around them, for built-in bookshelves and any of our other fitted furniture. We also cover Grange Park (1 mile north-east), Oakwood (1 mile west), Southgate (2 miles south-west), Osidge (2 miles south-west) and Palmers Green (2 miles south). Other parts of Enfield we cover include Edmonton (3 miles south-east), New Southgate (3 miles south-west), Bush Hill Park (2 miles east), Upper Edmonton (3 miles south-east), Gordon Hill (2 miles north-east) and Oakthorpe Park (2 miles south).

The problems built-in bookshelves solve

Some people are tired of shelves that bow and bookcases that lean. Bowing is a sign the shelves are too long or too thin for the load. Bespoke shelves are sized for the span and the weight.

Some of the things we’re asked to solve include:

  • Space for art books and records
  • Books with nowhere left to go
  • Bare walls that could hold shelving
  • A home library or study

Close to Oakwood Park? A room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • A quote in writing that sets out the job
  • Whether they measure the room themselves

Your questions about built-in bookshelves in World's End

Does a conservation area in or near World's End affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Is World's End in the area you cover for built-in bookshelves?

Yes, World's End is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Enfield and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

The furniture is built in sections, sized for the route along with the room itself. At the design visit, we measure the route as well as the room.

How do you decide on shelf depth?

The depth is set around your books. Deeper cupboards or shelves at the bottom and shallower shelves above is a common layout, and it keeps paperbacks from getting lost at the back.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work.

Will built-in bookshelves sag?

Whether a shelf sags depends on how long it is and what it carries. We size the shelves and use birch plywood where strength matters, adding a lip or support on longer runs. Overloading any shelf will still make it bend, so spread heavy books out.
