Widmore TV and Media Units

TV and media units in Widmore
How we make TV and media units for Widmore
In many period living rooms, the chimney breast and its two alcoves shape the whole wall. The alcoves can take cupboards for equipment and shelves above. Any chimney vent is kept clear. Most enquiries start with standard units leaving gaps and boxes and consoles on the floor, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Every room has its fixed points: the window, the door, the radiator and the sockets. In any home in Widmore, those set the layout for TV and media units before anything else. After that, the mix of cupboards, shelves and open space follows how you live, and the paint colour is agreed with you.
After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

How fitting day works
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. On fitting day, each piece is fitted to the room’s own walls, scribed where walls bow and levelled where floors slope. Spray-painted pieces arrive finished; hand-painted ones can be finished on site.
- You contact us with details of the room, the TV and your equipment.
- At the design visit, we measure the wall and plan the screen space, cable routes and ventilation with you. Any new sockets are a job for your electrician.
- We send a quote in writing with the design, materials and finish.
- We build the unit in our workshop, with routes and ventilation planned in, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- Fitting day: the unit goes in, is levelled and scribed, and the cable routes are left clear. A hand-painted finish is done on site, if you chose one.
How to prepare
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Let us know about parking near your home
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
Starting with a design visit
We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

What else we make in Widmore
What affects the cost of TV and media units
There is no set price, because there is no set room. The things that affect it are:
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- How big the furniture is
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- The number of doors and drawers
Tricky rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That is reflected in the quote, written once we have measured up.
Before the design visit
Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- Any ideas or images you’ve saved
- Rough measurements: width, height and depth
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, along with rough sizes. To send them over, fill in our short enquiry form, and we will arrange a design visit.
Could you do it yourself?
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.
How it is made
Spray-painted finish
Because it’s sprayed before fitting, the unit comes painted. Give the paint time to cure fully.
Shelves
Open shelves suit speakers and things you want on show, while cupboards hide the rest.
Built-in living-room furniture in Widmore
In the area around Widmore, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 33%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 25%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The National Heritage List records 14 entries within half a mile of the centre of Widmore. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. If your home is on or just off a main road, it helps to mention it. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.
Living in a block of flats near Bickley station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. The wider area includes historic houses like Bromley Palace, about 1.1 miles west. For a period home anywhere nearby, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. Close to Jubilee Country Park? Shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green.

Questions from Widmore
Can you make TV and media units for a home in Widmore?
Yes. Widmore is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Bromley and London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details.
Does a conservation area in or near Widmore affect fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
What happens at the measuring visit?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a written quote follows.
How is the price worked out?
Every job is priced for its room: size, internal fittings, the finish and how tricky the walls are all play a part. You’ll get a written quote once we have measured up.
Who chooses the colour?
You choose it. We agree the colour with you before anything is painted.
Can I send photos ahead of the visit?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, especially with rough sizes. You can send them when you drop us a line using the contact form.
Why bespoke in Widmore?
Bought media units are made in set widths, and rarely fill an alcove or a wall. Ours are scribed to the walls and can run up to the ceiling with shelves and cupboards around the screen. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in set sizes, and real rooms rarely match them, so it leaves gaps at the ends and empty space above. Fitted furniture is made to the room.
In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. It helps to talk about parking at the design visit.
