How we make fitted cupboards for Lisson Grove
Few walls in an older house are truly straight, and floors often slope. Every cupboard is scribed, trimmed by hand to meet the wall, then set level on adjustable feet or a plinth. Skirting boards, picture rails and coving are cut around or met neatly, so the cupboard looks as if it has always been there. People normally come to us about a cupboard for a recess or odd corner and floor-to-ceiling storage in a flat, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
Getting materials into a block means planning the lift, the corridor and the front door of the flat. Around Lisson Grove, most households are in purpose-built flats, so the sections for fitted cupboards are planned at the design visit. Common parts are protected while the pieces come in.
We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish.

Making use of tricky spaces in Lisson Grove
In the area around Lisson Grove, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 37%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 18%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The centre of Lisson Grove is within about a quarter of a mile of the Fisherton Street Estate Conservation Area. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. All of London, Westminster included, is inside the ULEZ. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Lisson Grove. Access and parking are talked through during the design visit.
For an older house near St Paul's Community Church, hallway recesses and alcoves are where fitted cupboards earn their keep. Close to Regent's Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place.

Questions from Lisson Grove
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
Is Lisson Grove in the area you cover for fitted cupboards?
Yes. Lisson Grove is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Westminster and London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.
How much time does fitting need?
How long fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We will talk it through during the design visit.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.
What are your cupboards made from?
Moisture-resistant MDF for painted doors and panels, and birch plywood where strength matters. The finish is spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in a colour you choose.
Boards, parts and paint
Spray-painted finish
A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, giving a smooth, even surface. You choose the colour.
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF gives a smooth surface for a painted finish, and the moisture-resistant grade suits damper rooms.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Flat-pack cupboards can be put together quickly by a confident DIYer, and that is a real advantage. A fitted cupboard needs a design visit, a quote, workshop time and fitting, but it’s built around your space. Off-the-shelf furniture is sized for an average room, and flats are rarely average, leaving gaps or crowding a door or radiator. Built-in pieces are designed around them.
Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured.
Why us?

From workshop to your room
In older rooms, the furniture typically has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. How long the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Loading near a block of flats can take some planning, so let us know about bays, permits or any loading area during the design visit. The sections are assembled in the flat and fixed to suit the walls. Saturdays can be arranged.
- To begin, get in touch through our contact form; a brief note on the space and anything in it that needs access is plenty.
- We visit to measure and plan the cupboard so meters, fuse boards and any boiler stay easy to reach. Boiler work itself is for a Gas Safe engineer.
- A written quote follows with the design, materials and finish.
- We make the cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with vents and access panels where they’re needed.
- The cupboards are fitted and set level, and we check the access with you.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Let us know about parking near your home
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
How to get a quote
Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it. For a quote, drop us a line using the contact form.

Do you need fitted cupboards in Lisson Grove?
Off-the-shelf cupboards rarely suit older houses. Uneven floors and walls that aren’t square leave gaps at the sides and top and wasted space above. A built-in cupboard follows the room instead.
These come up often when people first get in touch:
- Cupboards that suit a period house
- Tidying away the gas and electricity meters
- A linen cupboard on the landing
- Using the full height of a room
Near listed buildings like Hanover Terrace, under half a mile north-east of the centre of Lisson Grove, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
- How they handle walls that are not straight
- Whether they measure the room themselves
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
