Ask about bespoke kitchens in Covent Garden

Is bespoke worth it?

There is a place for both. In a simple modern kitchen, off-the-shelf can be enough. For period homes, tricky rooms or a painted look, bespoke tends to earn its place. Alcoves and recesses in period houses are rarely a standard width or depth, so off-the-shelf pieces either do not fit or leave a gap either side. Made for the space, the furniture uses the full width and height.

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

About our bespoke kitchens in Covent Garden

A kitchen needs other trades as well as a carpenter. Plumbing is done by your plumber, gas by a Gas Safe registered engineer and electrics by your electrician, and we plan the cabinets around where their work goes. We make kitchens from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are cabinets built around the appliances you choose and room for everything in the kitchen.

Narrow hallways in Victorian and Edwardian terraces set limits on how long a cabinet or panel can be. Around Covent Garden, a large share of homes were built before 1919, so the route to the kitchen is measured at the measuring visit. Long runs are made in sections and joined on site.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

What happens on fitting day

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.

  1. First, you tell us about the room. Say a little about the way you cook.
  2. The design visit covers measuring and planning the layout, where space allows.
  3. A quote in writing is sent to you.
  4. The kitchen is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the kitchen in your home, while your plumber, a Gas Safe engineer and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics.

Preparing the room

  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Advice

Flats, blocks and rented homes

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Let us know about it when you get in touch.

Kitchens in Covent Garden homes

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Covent Garden were built before 1919 (about 50%) and since 2000 (about 21%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The National Heritage List has 836 entries within half a mile of the centre of Covent Garden. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and kitchens can be designed to work around them. Purpose-built flats are home to about 77% of households in the area around Covent Garden, according to Census 2021. For a flat, kitchens are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

For an older house near Crown Court Church, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Royal Opera House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. If you live near Victoria Embankment Gardens, a cupboard by the back door for boots and coats can be built in with the kitchen.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Common questions about bespoke kitchens

My house in Covent Garden is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Does a conservation area in or near Covent Garden affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Can I choose my own worktop and appliances?

We plan the kitchen around the worktop, sink and appliances you choose. Knowing their sizes early helps, and your quote sets out what’s included.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we’ll see what we can do.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Do you work for landlords and letting agents?

Yes. We make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let as well as for householders. Access has to be agreed with the tenants for the visit and for fitting day.

Pricing bespoke kitchens in Covent Garden

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. The main factors are:

  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • The internal fittings
  • Parking near your home
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit, and the quote follows.

Getting in touch

A little information at the start saves time later. If you can, send:

  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Examples of the look you are after

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.
