About our fitted cupboards in Mile End

A fitted cupboard is built for one space and nowhere else. It can rise to the ceiling or stop at a height that suits the room, and it is trimmed to the walls so there are no tricky gaps. Hallways, landings, utility rooms, boot rooms and alcoves all make good homes for one, with the inside planned around what you want to store. Typical reasons to get in touch are floor-to-ceiling storage in a flat and hiding meters and a fuse board neatly, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

A large number of homes around Mile End date from 2000 onwards, and newer homes rarely come with much storage. Fitted storage can turn a hallway recess, a landing or the space under the stairs into somewhere useful. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on timber or metal studs, so the fixings are chosen for that.

The furniture is built in our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Mile End homes and fitted cupboards

Homes built since 2000 make up about 45% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Mile End, with about 21% built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. There are 86 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Mile End. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and fitted cupboards can be designed to work around them. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If you live on or close to a main road in Mile End, let us know at the measuring visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

For a family home near Beatrice Tate School, fitted cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit. Sutton House, about 1.8 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a shallow cupboard in a narrow hall can hold coats without blocking the way.

What it costs

What you pay depends on:

  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room

There’s no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, naming the materials and finish. To start, send us a few details through our contact form.

Helping us understand the room

Getting a few details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:

  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling

Rough sizes are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To get started, use our contact form. The written quote follows the visit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

A flat-pack or ready-made cupboard is quick to buy and often cheaper, and they suit some rooms well. Where walls lean and floors slope, they rarely sit flush. A fitted cupboard is a bigger outlay, but it fits the space it is built for. Big standalone units can dominate a compact room, whereas fitted pieces painted to suit the walls sit back into the space.

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. Let us know about parking at the design visit, so we can plan for it.

From workshop to your room

Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On the day, floors are covered first and the sections brought in. Each piece is levelled and fixed to suit plasterboard or block. Any hand painting can be finished on site.

  1. First, you tell us about the room and what it needs.
  2. We visit, measure and talk through doors, shelves and rails.
  3. A quote in writing is sent to you.
  4. Everything is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The cupboards are fitted in your home.

Preparing the room

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Getting a quote

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Advice

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

The problems fitted cupboards solve

Others want their cupboards to match the rest of the house. We can design doors that suit the style of the house, which keeps the look calm.

A few of the things people ask us to solve include:

  • A boiler cupboard that keeps access clear
  • Hiding meters and a fuse board neatly
  • Space for laundry, cleaning things and boots
  • Cupboards that suit a period house

Near listed buildings like Phoenix School, under half a mile north-east of the centre of Mile End, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted cupboards can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Will the quote be in writing?

FAQs: fitted cupboards in Mile End

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Mile End?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

I live in a flat in Mile End. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Fitted cupboards are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

What materials do you use for fitted cupboards?

Moisture-resistant MDF for painted doors and panels, and birch plywood where strength matters. The finish is spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in a colour you choose.

What do fitted cupboards cost?

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Each cupboard is different, so we price it after measuring. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You do not need to watch us work, but it helps to be around at the end.
