How we make fitted cupboards for Heron Quays

In many London hallways, space is tight, so a cupboard has to earn its place. A shallow cupboard can hold coats, shoes and bags without blocking the way, with hooks, a rail or shelves inside. Some people like a low bench with storage beneath for putting shoes on by the door. Most enquiries start with storage for towels and bedding and storage in a corner nothing else fits; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Many homes around Heron Quays were built since 2000, and in a newer house with a converted loft, the eaves and slopes are worth using. We build storage in lofts that are already converted or boarded. Elsewhere, fitted storage is fixed to plasterboard walls with fixings that suit it.

Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

Honest limits

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:

  • Work on a boiler, which is for an engineer on the Gas Safe Register
  • Electrical work inside the cupboard
  • Connecting appliances to water or waste

Your questions about fitted cupboards in Heron Quays

How do you fit fitted cupboards in a flat in Heron Quays?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can you make fitted cupboards for a home in Heron Quays?

Yes. We cover all of Tower Hamlets and the rest of London, and Heron Quays is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

How are fitted cupboards priced?

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Size, fittings and finish all affect the price. For a design visit, use our contact form.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. You do not need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

Caring for painted furniture

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Leave room in front of the meters
  • Think about how the cupboards will get in
  • Point out anything that needs access
  • List what you want to store before the design visit

Keep the way to the meters and fuse board clear. Try not to fill the space in front of them, so engineers and meter readers can get to them quickly.

If there is damp on a wall, have it sorted before we fit. Damp behind a cupboard can lead to mould, and external walls can be colder than internal ones. Ventilation inside the cupboard helps too.

From workshop to your room

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and lift the floor protection. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and answer any questions. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on studs, so on fitting day heavy pieces go into the studs or stand on the floor. Floors are protected throughout, as many newer homes have finished floors that mark easily.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the space.
  2. We visit, measure and talk through doors, shelves and rails.
  3. You receive a quote in writing, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cupboards are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The cupboards are fitted in your home. They’re set level and scribed to the walls as they go in.

Preparing the room

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Starting with a design visit

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, then send a quote in writing. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To book a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Heron Quays were built since 2000 (about 68%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 16%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The centre of Heron Quays is within about a quarter of a mile of the West India Dock Conservation Area. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs. In Heron Quays, a van will typically need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. We ask about parking during the design visit, so the van can be planned for.

Queen's House, about 1.7 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a landing recess can take a linen cupboard built to its exact size. Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.

What it costs

What you pay depends on:

  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • The overall size of the piece

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Helping us understand the room

A little information at the start saves time later. If you can, send:

  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • How you want to use the space
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
