Fitted cupboards for homes in Limehouse

In many London hallways, space is tight, so a cupboard has to earn its place. We can make a shallow cupboard for coats, shoes and bags that still leaves room to pass, fitted out with a rail, hooks or shelves. Some people like a low bench with storage beneath for putting shoes on by the door. If you are living with floor-to-ceiling storage in a flat and a boiler cupboard that keeps access clear, that is what fitted cupboards are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Many homes around Limehouse have been built since 2000, and newer homes rarely come with much storage. Fitted storage can turn a hallway recess, a landing or the space under the stairs into somewhere useful. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on timber or metal studs, so the fixings are chosen for that.

The quote comes in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

FAQs: fitted cupboards in Limehouse

How do you fit fitted cupboards in a flat in Limehouse?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Fitted cupboards are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Should I send pictures?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough measurements. It is useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch.

Can you build a cupboard around a boiler?

Yes, as long as the design respects the boiler’s instructions. We allow for the clearances and ventilation it needs and keep access clear for the engineer.

Fitting day, step by step

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made at the design visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving the room tidy. How long fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Newer developments sometimes have their own parking and loading rules, so it helps to let us know during the design visit. The furniture comes in sections and is fixed in place. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. We start with the space and what you want to store.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and look at the walls, floor and ceiling.
  3. We send a written quote with the design, materials and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. We build the cupboards in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the cupboards are fitted and trimmed to the room.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Making use of awkward spaces in Limehouse

About 42% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Limehouse went up since 2000, and about 24% between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. There are 85 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Limehouse. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and fitted cupboards can be designed to work around them. Parking on many inner London streets is controlled, with zones run by each borough. For fitting in Limehouse, a van usually needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Parking is worth mentioning at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

If you live in a period home close to St Paul's Bow Common, a landing recess can take a linen cupboard built to its exact size. For families living near Stepney Greencoat Church of England Primary School, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. If you live in a flat close to Limehouse station, it’s useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Materials and finishes

Shelves

We plan shelf heights around what you will store, from towels and bedding to tins and boxes. Long spans need a thicker shelf or a support.

Doors and drawer fronts

Where space is tight, we plan how each door swings, so nothing blocks the way.

Where other trades come in

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Any plumbing in a utility room
  • Wiring for lights or sockets
  • Moving or servicing a boiler

If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.

What it is made from

  • Adjustable shelves
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Ventilated doors
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t usually do that in an older room.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.

Flats, leases and landlords

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we have measured the way in.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.
