TV and media units in Kings Cross

Set-top boxes, consoles and amplifiers give off heat, so sealing equipment in a cupboard is not a good idea. Ventilation is planned into the design, using open backs, gaps or openings where equipment sits. It is worth checking each maker’s guidance on clearances. People usually come to us about wasted space around the screen and a cabinet that traps heat; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

With most households around Kings Cross in purpose-built flats, getting the furniture into the building matters as much as the design. Each piece is built in sections that fit the stairs, the lift and the doorways, and assembled and fitted in place. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.

Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Pricing TV and media units in Kings Cross

The price for your room depends on:

  • How big the furniture is
  • The internal fittings
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors

There is no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

What we need to know

Ahead of the design visit, we’ll normally ask about:

  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved

To get a quote for TV and media units in Kings Cross, fill in our short enquiry form. Let us know which room it is and roughly what you have in mind, plus any rough measurements. Next comes a design visit, followed by a quote in writing.

Is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf TV units come in a few set colours. Ours are painted in a colour agreed with you, sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand. Flats tend to have walls interrupted by doors, radiators and sockets, and standard widths rarely fit between them. Built-in pieces are sized for each stretch of wall.

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Honest limits

Not everything around TV and media units is carpentry, such as an electrician, a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here’s what to know:

  • New sockets behind the TV, which need an electrician
  • Setting up and tuning the TV, boxes and speakers
  • Installing aerials, satellite dishes or broadband

If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What goes into it

  • Hand-painted finish
  • Ventilated cabinets
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Cable routes
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

Common questions about TV and media units

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Kings Cross?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Can you make TV and media units for a home in Kings Cross?

Yes, Kings Cross is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Camden and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, followed by a quote.

Do I need the building owner’s consent?

Possibly. It depends on your lease, and some need consent for alterations. We can’t give advice on your lease.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a written quote follows.

How do you hide the TV cables?

We plan cable routes through the unit from the start, with openings and access panels. Where cables reach the wall depends on the sockets.

Does the unit work if the TV is on a bracket?

Where the TV is to be wall-mounted, we plan the unit around the bracket and the cable route behind it. The bracket needs a sound wall so we check the wall at the design visit.

Fitting day, step by step

Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. In a block without a lift, every section goes up the stairs, so it’s sized to be manageable. The tightest landing sets the largest piece. The pieces are assembled in the flat.

  1. You send us a note about the room and the unit you’d like.
  2. We visit to measure and go through the design and how the unit should look in the room.
  3. You get a written quote covering the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. The unit is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF, which takes paint well, and birch plywood.
  5. The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, and any hand painting is done in the room.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

Advice

Living-room storage in Kings Cross

Homes built before 1919 make up about 39% of the housing in the streets around Kings Cross, with about 20% built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. There are 252 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Kings Cross. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and TV and media units can be designed to work around them. Purpose-built flats are more common around Kings Cross than across Camden: about 76% of households, against about 56%, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. So the route in, from stairs to lifts, is part of the design.

Close to Lewis Cubitt Park? TV and media units can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear. If you live in a flat close to London Kings Cross station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Pancras, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Tips worth knowing

Getting the most from TV and media units starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Plan open spaces for anything controlled by a remote
  • Choose how the TV will sit before the design is finished
  • Think about the viewing height from your sofa
  • Mention parking and stairs when we visit

Doors can settle a little once the unit is in use. Hinges can typically be adjusted to line them up again.

Ask your electrician about new sockets rather than running extension leads through the unit, and do not overload sockets.
