Common questions about fitted cupboards

Is Westbourne Green in the area you cover for fitted cupboards?

Yes, we work across Westminster, Westbourne Green included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details.

I live near London Paddington station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Westminster and the rest of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details about the room.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

What are your cupboards made from?

Moisture-resistant MDF for painted doors and panels, and birch plywood where strength matters. The finish is spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in a colour you choose.

How much does a fitted cupboard cost?

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. A small boiler cupboard and a full run of hallway storage are very different jobs, so we price it after measuring. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

Can a fitted cupboard cover the meters and fuse board?

Yes, while keeping access clear. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so the doors or panels are planned to open easily.

About our fitted cupboards in Westbourne Green

Landings often have a corner or a stretch of wall that does nothing. We can turn it into a linen cupboard, or storage for bedding and spare towels, with shelves spaced to suit what goes on them. We plan it so doors open without catching the stairs or the banister. We make fitted cupboards from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and people most often get in touch about storage for towels and bedding and cupboards that sit well with skirting and coving.

In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around Westbourne Green, the space under the stairs in a terraced house often holds the gas meter, the electricity meter or the fuse board. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so the design keeps them accessible. Sash and bay windows are common in houses of that age too, and good places for seating with storage below.

Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

What happens on fitting day

The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is usually only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that aren’t straight, so there is some trimming and adjusting on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so tell us about permits and bays at the measuring visit.

  1. You tell us where the cupboards should go and what they need to hold, including anything awkward like a boiler or meter.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and look at the walls, floor and ceiling. Doors, shelves and rails are agreed then too.
  3. A quote follows, setting out the design and finish.
  4. The cupboards are made and finished in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the cupboards are fitted and trimmed to the room. A hand-painted finish is applied on site, if you chose one.

Before and after fitting day

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Leave room in front of the meters
  • Think about what each cupboard will hold
  • Tell us about meters and boilers in the space
  • Think about how the cupboards will get in

Doors are hung and adjusted when we fit them. Houses move a little with the seasons, and hinges can be adjusted to keep the gaps even. A door that starts to rub can usually be set right at the hinge.

Let us know about parking and access at the design visit. Much of London has controlled parking, and blocks of flats can have rules about lifts and deliveries.

Fitted cupboards in Westbourne Green: local notes

About 67% of the homes in the streets around Westbourne Green went up before 1919, and about 12% between 1973 and 1999, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The Bayswater Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Westbourne Green. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Purpose-built flats are home to about 59% of households in the streets around Westbourne Green, according to Census 2021. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

What affects the cost of fitted cupboards

Several things affect the price:

  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • The number of doors and drawers

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Before the design visit

Ahead of the design visit, we’ll normally ask about:

  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.

How it is made

Shelves

Some shelves can be set to move as your storage changes.

Hand-painted finish

Some people like the character of a hand-painted finish in an older house. You choose the paint colour.

The problems fitted cupboards solve

Standard cupboards do not sit well in many period homes. Sloping floors, walls that lean and odd alcove widths leave gaps and wasted space above. A fitted cupboard is made to the room’s real shape.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • Floor-to-ceiling storage in a flat
  • Cupboards that sit well with skirting and coving
  • A cupboard for the meters with easy access
  • A hallway cupboard for coats and shoes

For a family home near Edward Wilson Primary School, fitted cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit.

What to check before you book
