TV and media units for homes in North End
A built-in TV wall often needs sockets in new places, like behind the screen or in the equipment cupboard. That is work for your electrician, and Part P of the Building Regulations covers some electrical work in homes. It is best done before we fit. If your home has empty alcoves beside the TV and equipment running hot in a closed cupboard, TV and media units made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.
In a house from the Victorian or Edwardian years, the front room usually keeps its chimney breast even where the fireplace has gone. That matters around North End, as a large share of the homes there were built before 1919. The recesses either side take TV and media units scribed to the plaster and cut around the skirting.
The furniture is made at our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Tips worth knowing
A few practical points help before and after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:
- Let us know about access early
- Talk to your electrician early about sockets
- Check each box’s guidance on ventilation and clearances
- Think about whether you’ll upgrade the screen
Use the access panels and cable routes when you add or change leads. It keeps the unit tidy.
Do not stack boxes on top of each other in one space. Give each its own space.
Living-room storage in North End
Homes built before 1919 make up about 52% of the housing in the neighbourhood around North End, with about 17% built between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. North End is partly covered by the Hampstead Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need permission. If you are unsure, check with the council before work starts. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Camden included. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in North End, as it does anywhere else in London. We go through parking and access at the design visit.
Near listed buildings like The Hill Garden Central Temple Summerhouse, less than half a mile south of the centre of North End, older homes may keep original joinery that TV and media units can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. For a flat near Hampstead Heath station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. For families living near The King Alfred School, TV and media units can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else.
North End is about 4 miles south-east of St Pancras, in the London Borough of Camden. Wherever you are in North End, the process is the same: we visit and measure, send a written quote, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. North End is one of 28 places on our list for Camden.

Pricing TV and media units in North End
Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:
- Parking and unloading on your street
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- The overall size of the piece
We do not publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To start, use our contact form.
Helping us understand the room
You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. Just send what you can:
- What the furniture needs to hold
- Rough sizes: width, height and depth
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- Examples of the look you’re after
Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.
Questions from North End
How do you fit TV and media units in a flat in North End?
We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. TV and media units are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
Can you fit TV and media units to the uneven walls of an older house in North End?
Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.
Do photos help?
Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It’s useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
How much will my TV unit cost?
Every job is priced for its room: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. You’ll get a quote in writing once we’ve measured up.
Can you add sockets behind the TV?
We don’t do electrical work. Sockets and wiring are for your electrician, and Part P of the Building Regulations covers some electrical work in homes. We share the layout so the sockets line up with the design.
Can you plan for a future TV?
We can plan the opening with a bigger screen in mind, if you expect to upgrade. Mention the largest screen you might buy when we visit.
What happens on fitting day
With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.
- You get in touch with details of the room and where it is in your home.
- At the design visit we measure the wall and also the hall, stairs and doorways the unit has to pass through. Let us know about parking too, since a van may need a visitor permit or a paid bay.
- A quote in writing follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
- The unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route in.
- We bring the sections in, join them on the wall and scribe them to fit. The finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.
Before we arrive
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
Starting with a design visit
If you know what you want, say so; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Why bespoke in North End?
Most stands have a cable hole or two at the back, but the wires still show between the stand, the wall and the screen. A built-in unit has routes planned through it, with access panels for changes later. Tall ceilings in older homes leave a band of empty wall above standard furniture, wasting space that could hold things you rarely use. Fitted furniture can go all the way up.
Awkward rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it.
Why choose Bespoke Carpentry in North End
- We visit, measure and discuss the design before we quote
- We work across all London boroughs
- Scribed to uneven walls
- Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
Take a look at our comparison of bespoke and off-the-shelf or what a quote should include.
Honest limits
We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, and there are a few other limits too:
- Connecting and setting up your equipment
- Aerial, satellite or broadband installation
- Any electrical work (your electrician handles that, and Part P covers some of it)
