FAQs: fitted home offices in Nunhead

I live near Nunhead station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Southwark and the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details about the room.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Nunhead?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to tell us about parking during the design visit.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, but it helps to be around at the end.

Do pictures help?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, especially with rough sizes. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Can the spare room be an office and a guest room?

That depends on the space you have. An office on one wall often leaves room for a bed. At the design visit, we’ll suggest what works.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

How we make fitted home offices for Nunhead

The desk is the heart of a home office. It is made at a height and depth to suit you and the way you work, with drawers or cupboards beneath where they’re useful. Shelving and cupboards can then be built around it. The design visit in Nunhead is where these choices are made. We make home offices from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about a screen that’s hard to read by the window and work things on show in the evening.

Around Nunhead, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and Victorian and Edwardian rooms normally have a chimney breast with an alcove each side. A desk can sit in an alcove, with shelving above and a cupboard below. Walls are rarely straight in older houses, so the desk and shelves are scribed to fit.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Bespoke fitted home offices or ready-made?

Bespoke furniture lets the desk, shelves and cupboards be planned together. Ready-made pieces bought separately rarely line up. A single design gives the room clean, consistent lines. Alcoves and recesses in period houses are rarely a standard width or depth, so ready-made units rarely fill them properly. Made for the space, the furniture uses the full width and height.

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it.

Why choose us

  • 300+ projects completed
  • Made in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • Edges scribed to follow your walls
  • Made for your room, not a standard size

Fitting day, step by step

When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made at our workshop come in next, a piece at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

  1. You tell us how you work and where you’d like the office, whether that is a spare room, an alcove or a landing.
  2. At the design visit, the room is measured and the layout planned.
  3. We agree the desk, shelving and storage, and send a written quote, with the finish set out.
  4. The office is made at our workshop and painted in your colour. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home and check every drawer and door with you. The cable routes are left ready to use.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that is best sorted before fitting day. We can’t give advice on leases.

Pricing fitted home offices in Nunhead

Not every room costs the same, for these reasons:

  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • How square the room is

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Helping us understand the room

There is no need for exact sizes or plans. Just send what you can:

  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Examples of the look you are after
  • What the furniture needs to hold

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Practical tips

Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:

  • Note the position of sockets in the room
  • Mention any parking rules on your street
  • Think about glare on your screen
  • Estimate the shelf space you will need

When we’ve finished fitting, the desk and storage are ready. Paint needs time to cure fully, so treat the new finish gently at first. Use a mat under a laptop or anything with rubber feet while the paint hardens.

A chair that bumps the desk can chip the paint. Ease the chair in rather than pushing it hard. Minor chips can be touched up with the matching colour.
