Fitted cupboards for homes in Telegraph Hill
Gas meters, electricity meters and fuse boards tend to be where you’d least like them, under the stairs, in a hallway or beside the front door. We can build a cupboard that tidies them away, while keeping them easy to reach. Engineers and meter readers will need access, so the doors or panels are planned with that in mind. We make fitted cupboards from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about a linen cupboard on the landing and somewhere for coats, shoes and bags.
Around Telegraph Hill, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and older houses have lots of odd corners: under the stairs, in the bay, along the hall and under the eaves of a converted loft. Fitted storage is designed to make those spaces useful, scribed to walls that are rarely straight.
A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It sets out the fitted cupboard designed for your room, its materials and its finish.

How fitting works for fitted cupboards
Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so there is some trimming and adjusting on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, as terraced streets are often busy.
- You get in touch and describe the space.
- We visit to measure the space and the route in from the street, including the stairs and doorways.
- We send a quote in writing.
- The cupboards are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route.
- The sections are carried in, joined and set level. The finish is sprayed before fitting or painted by hand on site.
Preparing the room
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
Starting with a design visit
If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.
Advice
Caring for painted furniture
Looking after painted furniture is simple. A few things help it stay looking good:
- List what you want to store before the design visit
- Don’t store things against the boiler
- Go easy on new doors for a while
- Check your lease if you live in a flat
We adjust the doors as part of the fitting. Houses move a little with the seasons, and hinges can be adjusted to keep the gaps even. A door that starts to rub can usually be set right at the hinge.
Let us know about parking and access during the design visit. Much of London has controlled parking and some blocks need lifts or deliveries booked ahead.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Ready-made units are made in fixed sizes, so there’s typically a gap at the side or a space above. Ours are built to the full width and height you choose, so less space goes to waste. Ready-made pieces are proportioned for newer homes and can look lost in an older one, while fitted furniture can follow the room’s own lines.
Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that is part of the price. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space.
Why choose Bespoke Carpentry in Telegraph Hill

FAQs: fitted cupboards in Telegraph Hill
Can you fit fitted cupboards to the uneven walls of an older house in Telegraph Hill?
Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
Do you cover homes near Brockley station?
Yes, homes across Lewisham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room.
How do you get the furniture up the stairs?
Getting it in is planned at the measuring visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and each section is made to a size that will get through.
How much does a fitted cupboard cost?
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. The size, the inside layout and the finish all make a difference. For a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
How much time does fitting need?
How long fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. We will talk it through at the design visit.
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you.
Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you contact us.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Homes built before 1919 make up about 49% of the housing in the area around Telegraph Hill, with about 16% built since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. 6 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Telegraph Hill. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. All of London, Lewisham included, is inside the ULEZ. If you live near Fordham Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place. Queen's House, about 2 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, an old boiler or airing cupboard can be rebuilt with proper shelves. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Southwark Adult Education Institute, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.
