Fitted cupboards for homes in Sudbury Hill

Hallways in London homes are often long and narrow, so every cupboard needs to be worth the room it takes. We can make a shallow cupboard for coats, shoes and bags that still leaves room to pass, with hooks, a rail or shelves inside. A bench with a lift-up lid or drawers under it is another option for putting shoes on by the door. We make fitted cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about space for laundry, cleaning things and boots and storage for coats and shoes in the hallway.

An interwar house tends to have truer walls than a Victorian one, though rarely square corners. Much of the housing around Sudbury Hill is interwar, semi-detached or detached, so we still scribe every piece to the wall. Each piece is levelled on site, so doors, lids and drawers line up.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the fitted cupboard we have designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and it’s what the workshop builds to.

Questions we’re often asked

Does a conservation area in or near Sudbury Hill affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Is Sudbury Hill in the area you cover for fitted cupboards?

Yes, we work across Brent, Sudbury Hill included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can use our contact form with some details.

Do photos help?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough measurements. To send them, use our contact form.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

How much does a fitted cupboard cost?

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. The size, the inside layout and the finish all make a difference. For a design visit, use our contact form.

Will the cupboards fit my uneven walls?

Yes. We scribe each cupboard to follow the wall and set it level on adjustable feet or a plinth. It’s one of the reasons fitted joinery suits period homes.

Fitted cupboards in Sudbury Hill: local notes

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 53% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Sudbury Hill, with about 12% built between 1973 and 1999, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. 3 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central Sudbury Hill. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If your home in Sudbury Hill is on or near a main road, tell us during the design visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.

If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Andrew, a shallow cupboard in a narrow hall can hold coats without blocking the way. For families living near Sudbury Primary School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. Northolt Manor, about 2.2 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, fitted cupboards can fill recesses that are rarely a standard size.

What fitted cupboards cannot fix

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Any gas work around the boiler
  • New sockets, lighting or wiring (your electrician)
  • Moving gas or electricity meters

If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

What goes into it

  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Ventilated doors
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Adjustable shelves

How fitting day works

Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. It starts with a short note from you.
  2. At the design visit we measure at several points, as walls and floors in older homes are rarely flat or level.
  3. You receive a quote in writing covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cupboards and trim the edges to follow the walls and ceiling.
  6. The spray-painted or hand-painted finish completes the job, and new paintwork should be treated gently while it cures.

How to prepare

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

What affects the cost of fitted cupboards

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. The main factors are:

  • The number of doors and drawers
  • How square the room is
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • The internal fittings

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. Let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so it can be planned.

Before the design visit

You do not need exact measurements or a plan. Just send what you can:

  • How you want to use the space
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit. To get started, tell us about the room on our contact form. The written quote follows the visit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Flat-pack cupboards can be put together quickly by a confident DIYer, and that is a real advantage. A fitted cupboard needs a design visit, a quote, workshop time and fitting, and in return the cupboard is built for your home. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in a few set depths, so they can stick out too far or waste space behind. With fitted furniture, the depth is chosen for the room.

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.
